The restaurant says its style is Innovative Southwest Fusion and that seems like a perfect description to me. I enjoyed a delicious and creative meal in a very pleasant outdoor setting with friendly and welcoming staff.

The Diablo Salad was full of tasty ingredients and the San Saba Pecan Chicken was also excellent. And the margarita was perfect after a long dusty day of hiking.

Two of us rolled into town late on a Sunday evening with low expectations. Although the name did nothing to spur our enthusiasm, it appeared there was little other choice. Cafe Diablo became a highlight of the trip for the savory surprise it presented. Unassuming from the exterior, it has sparse but pleasant decor, and we found it quite busy with a bustling Sunday crowd. The menu includes a broad offering of dishes and pairings not frequently seen; we inquired about the chef and were given a brief bio. The staff were prompt and helpful and friendly. We each had different fish entrees which were fresh, well seasoned, flavorful and satisfying. Portions were generous and the prices were reasonable for the quality. The wine selection was decent; craft beers not as much.

My husband & I recently stayed in Torrey Utah, our hub for visiting Capitol Reef. Torrey is a very small town, has a few restaurants in the area & the innkeeper suggested Cafe Diablo. My husband had rattlesnake as appetizer, I had mushroom & spinach salad. Then for dinner it was ribs & elk, portions were large. Now the meal was delicious, but the prices I thought were high.

As foodies, we were very excited by the menu on the website. We were looking forward to some great tasting creative food here. Unfortunately, while the concepts and the presentation were interesting, the flavors weren't there. We had the Asparagus Firecrackers and the Rattlesnake Cakes for starters. The asparagus was the best thing we ate. The cakes were dry and really, really needed the aioli, which was good. Main courses were the Lamb Shank Tempranillo and Pomegranate & Chipotle Glazes Ribs. The lamb shank was bland. Any seasoning did not come through. The rib meat was also bland. The sauce was VERY sweet and the mashed potatoes were swimming and melting in it.

On the plus side, our server was great! Very friendly, personable and able to answer several questions we had. The portion sizes were generous and would have been a great value if things tasted better.

It was too cool to sit outside, which looked nice. The inside was fairly plain. We spent a lot of money on a very disappointing meal.
