7 years going to spice. Food is always killer. This place introduced me to Thai food and now im addicted. Certainly not 5 star food but great for dinner out any night of the week. The prices are also great and doesnt hurt like most places in NYC.

Spice is a chain. They recently took over another Thai restaurant on 77th and 1st Avenue. It has been attractively renovated with lots of fresh white furniture and uncrowded tables in a smallish room. The food is excellent and fresh with lots of options for both appetizers and main courses. The service is friendly and prompt. The only downside is a rather annoying heating motor which is installed above the front door and gives off a generalized sound. Given that most upper East Side restaurants are too noisy to even have a conversation, this sound is not as intrusive as the usual loud talking crowds. It is a lovely place to eat with attentive service.

First of all, I did not realize until writing this review that there was another Spice restaurant in Chelsea area of NYC that is on the same street and about two blocks away! So readers should be aware of this so that they do not mix up reviews of either restaurant or accidentally go to the wrong restaurant.

My family was staying at the Hotel Indigo in Chelsea for the pre-Christmas week.
This restaurant was within fair walking distance (6-7 blocks).
We love Thai food and this place did not disappoint.

We had reservations and were 5 minutes early and were seated right away. We went on a Tuesday night before Christmas about 6: 30 p.m.. We had planned to take in a show at the Gotham Comedy Club which is within walking distance of this restaurant.

The portions were generous. The menu was not as extensive as many Thai or Asian restaurtants, but it appears that the aromas and the smiles of the patrons indicated that the ambience and food were a hit.

I particularly liked the Pad Thai with tofu which was very flavorful.
The Chicken-based soup with vegetables was a nice starter. Flavorful but not heavy or unbalanced in seasoning.

Service was good, but not special.
The room was a bit dark so made it hard to read the menu with my 50ish year old eyes, even with the two small candles on the table for four.

The decor is contemporary and cool, sort of like Hotel Indigo vibe, also, in Chelsea.
The crowd was mostly younger adults, 20-40 year old demographic.

It is not a large place, so if you have a large party of 10 or more you definitely need to call ahead.
Bathrooms were clean and attractive.

In summary,
if looking for cheap, good Thai food with prompt service and cool urban decor, this is highly recommended. It would even be a good deal to take a bus or subway if you are staying or visiting the Times Square area and get away from all those crowds and noise.
