“What a disappointment”
Reviewed 7 November 2009

The food was the best part of the experience, particularly the cauliflower and brussel sprout soup, although the halibut was overcooked for such a thin piece. What disappointed us was the service which was casual at best. We were told that the upstairs was closed, only to find that immediately afterwards others were offered the choice. When it came to ordering, several lunch items were no longer available and there was no sparkling water available. The tap water we asked for came without ice. However, the worst aspect came at the end when we went to use the bathrooms. The changes to the restaurant have not extended to the basement where thebathrooms are situated and the dirty carpet that led downstairs had a lingering smell of vomit which was nauseating. The bathrooms themselves are badly in need of reburbishment. This was our first stop on a reurn to New York after a year and we anticipated the changes to Bouley's eagerly. We are unlikely to return.

“Excellent food, good atmosphere, now with more tables”
Reviewed 12 September 2009

Originally, Upstairs was over Bouley's bakery on the second floor of a two-story building with a very small footprint. The bakery has relocated, so now there are two floors and tables on the sidewalk. The original second floor remains classic NY: small, crowded tables. There is more breathing room on the first floor Both originally and in the expanded version the food remains excellent. The menu includes a great burger and a mix of American and Japanese items that are always well-prepared. Notwithstanding the fact ii is run by one of NYC's superstar restaurateurs the food is reasonably priced for the area, and normally a table is not a wait at all (although my family and I tend to drop in when the dinner hour is not at its peak). An easy way to sample a part of David Bouley's growing empire in an informal setting.

Bouley is an amazing restaurant, and the Upstairs restaurant across the street has absolutly insane food for a great value. The service can be a little sketchy at times, but if you can deal with that, the food is worth it!
