Owner description: The world-famous Empire State Building offers unobstructed panoramic views of New York City and beyond from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. daily. Our 86th and 102nd floor Observation Decks offer the two highest vantage points in New York City. Soaring 1,454 feet above Midtown Manhattan from base to antenna, the Empire State Building is the World's Most Famous Office Building. Named America's favorite building in a poll conducted by the American Institute of Architects, the Empire State Building is one of New York City's top tourist destinations. On a clear day, you can see up to five states from our Observation Decks - New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Guests can enjoy our outdoor viewing area on our open-air 86th floor Observatory, or our indoor climate-controlled viewing areas on the 86th and 102nd floors. We recently launched our new Multimedia Experience as well, which guides visitors through the extraordinary exhibits and breathtaking views with additional depth on the building's history in eight languages - including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean. The Empire State Building aims to provide entertainment for guests of all ages. Bringing children? Have their picture taken with King Kong himself on our 80th floor from Thursdays through Mondays (12 p.m. until 9 p.m.). Celebrating a first date or an anniversary? Enjoy romantic tunes from our saxophone player from 9 p.m. until midnight every Thursday through Saturday night. Tickets can be purchased through our website. Our celebrated tower lights are often illuminated to commemorate holidays, events and special causes. In the Fall of 2012, we upgraded our tower lighting system from floodlights to one-of-a-kind LED tower lights. The state-of-the-art system allows customized lighting capabilities from a palette of over 16 million colors! To watch some of our recent light shows, visit our YouTube page. Reigning as the world's tallest building from 1931 to 1970, the Empire State Building is known for its distinct Art Deco style. Construction of the renowned icon only took one year and 45 days, and logged more than 7 million man hours. This is the fastest construction to date for a project of its scale. Additionally, from classics like An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle to recent hits such as Oblivion and Elf, our place in pop culture has been solidified since our early days. In fact, over 200 movies and TV shows have featured the Empire State Building in them!

We knew in advance there would be long queues for this attraction over the Christmas and New Year holiday season so left our visit until late as possible into our trip (2nd Jan 2013). We arrived just before 10am and was met with a huge line not only in the foyer of the ESB but also along the street for about a block.
We had an explorer pass but this does not allow fast track / skip the line. Fortunately I had been shopping at macys the day previously and picked up a VIP ticket at the visitor centre. WOW best thing a did. It allowed us to skip not only the huge line outside but the whole foyer and the security screening (which was taking 45mins to an hour to clear). We were at the admission desk in 5 minutes.

We did find ourselves waiting in line for elevator for around 15mins and once at the 86th floor the view on a beautiful clear January morning was breathtaking and so was the cold! We didnt pay the additional $25 each to go up to floor 106.

We previously visited in mid February which was a much quieter time.

Hi dajascot- We are happy to hear you found the views to be breathtaking and were able to take advantage of our Express Pass, which allows guests to skip the ticket and elevator lines. We do see an increase in visitors during the holiday season, and we appreciate everyone's patience during this time, as we do our best to keep the lines moving. During our peak season, a good tip for visitors with standard tickets is to come around the time we open (8 a.m.) or after 10 p.m. We hope that you'll check out the spectacular views from our indoor 102nd floor Observatory on your next visit. Thank you for your visits. - Empire State Building

When I went it was a February and it was a nice cold, chilly winter day in New York. We walked straight in, paid at the desk, went straight to the lift..straight up to the top and walked around the top part that was very safe and surrounded by railings. (Not the very top as it was too windy..we were on the 81st floor).
The views all around were astonishing..you can see for miles over New york..the views of the Chrysler building and Macys from up high were the best.Of course they have to boost their income and as you queue for the last part (about 10 minutes) they shove you in front of a backdrop and take a photo..of which of course you can buy copies for $10. Then after your viewing of the empire you automatically are taken down to the Shop where you can buy all sorts of merchandise..magnets/hoodies/photos/books/pens....etc
If holidaying in NY you have to visit..even if only the once.

Hi 68comeback- We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your experience and the amazing, panoramic views from our 86th floor Observatory. It's nice you consider this to be a must-do in NYC. While you did not opt to purchase the photo or any souvenirs in the gift shop, we provide both these options for the many visitors who do want to have a memento from their visit. Thank you for coming and for writing this review. - Empire State Building

Booked tickets in the UK. If you can afford it book the express tickets, it took us two hours to get to the 80th floor. It was queue after queue after queue. However, when you get to the 86th floor, the view is amazing. We arrived after sun down but the night view was spectacular. We had also booked for the 102nd floor, this was also amazing but you cannot go outside at this level.

Worth the money, but be prepared to queue!

This building is such an amazing feat as it was built in 13 months from start to finish in the 1930s. Very few lives were lost and the result is breathtaking. Another must see for the New York visitor!

We went Friday December 28th right around lunch. The line outside was 1 hour and would have been another hour or two inside. We were given a VIP pass that cut the line down to 45 minutes. I don't recommend going to the empire state building around Christmas or Mew Years unless you go very early in the morning or get VIP passes. You can get these at the concierge desk at high end hotels including the Marriot Marquis. With this pass you skip the outside line and about 2/3 of the inside line. Tickets were $100 for a family of 4.

Hi 4Gs- We appreciate you taking the time during the holiday season to visit. We do see an increase in the number of visitors during the holidays, and we appreciate everyone's patience, as we do our best to keep the lines moving. A good tip for visiting during this season is to come either around the time we open (8 a.m.), or after 10 p.m. We also offer an Express Pass ticket option ($47.50) that allows you to skip the ticket and elevator lines. Another suggestion is to purchase your tickets from our website and print them out ahead of time, which will allow you to skip the ticket line when you arrive, regardless of the ticket type you purchased. Thank you for your visit. - Empire State Building
