Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

“Amazing part of history”

I have wanted to visit here for a long time. There are multiple tours you can take which focus on a different family's experience living in the actual building you are touring. The guides are very knowledgeable not only about the family but also about U.S. history and the global picture of the time period. It is like going back in time. I loved it and would visit again for another family's story.

“Interesting glimpse into the Immigrant experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

I visited the Tenement Museum last month with my 10 year old son and elderly parents. Keeping my son's attention span in mind, we took the hourlong "sweatshop" tour and (the adults at least) found it very educational. The building is basically in the same shape as it was when boarded up in the 1930's! The tour guide was informative and helped bring the tour to life recounting the stories of the specific families who lived there. Overall, I would highly recommend it for adults and perhaps teens as a living history glimpse into one of the vital chapters in American history.

“Not Helpful or Friendly or even logical at all”

Had spent $77 dollars on two adult and one child ticket for this museum. Had looked at several times to try to find a tour appropriate for our 9 yr old son and then went a headed and ordered online as their site suggested that they sell out and it would be adviseable. However as it was done ahead and was several days into our trip before we were to go and I had looked at several times, we got confused and thought we had tickets for the 1 o'clock tour when in fact it was the noon. When we contacted the museum at 12:15 1 to try to reschedule, we were told that nothing could be done for us. They REFUSED to refund or reschedule our tour. We checked online and they had plenty of tickets left for later in the afternoon, but told us (Collin) that "We can't reschedule because then we have lost out on the original tickets that you purchased for noon that we could have sold." Ridiculous! Am pretty certain from looking at their website that they had not sold out that tour either, anyway!! Then told us that there was no Supervisor (Rachael) to speak to until next Monday!! We will have flown home by then! Don't waste your money or time here. They are completely

“Don't worry about the partisipation bit..”

I don't like all that having to say where your from and what you think the people who lived here felt - but it was good and a real eye opener. Our guide (can't recall her name) was very good, it came to life and is a must for visitors (and locals).
