Owner description: The final resting place of President Ulysses Simpson Grant and his wife, Julia, is the largest mausoleum in North America. It testifies to a people's gratitude for the man who ended the bloodiest conflict in American history as Commanding General of the Union Army and then, as President of the United States, strove to heal a nation after a civil war and make rights for all citizens a reality.

“Grant's Tomb”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 December 2013

This monument and tomb of General Grant and his wife was unexpectedly interesting. Finding ourselves near it, we went in. First, it is a huge, gorgeous mausoleum. The adoration and tribute that is being bestowed is unbelievable. The stone work, cupola and details of the building are breathtaking. If you are near, do stop in.

“Beautiful building”

This is a lovely spot and the burial
Site of one of our Presidents. The location is wonderful and worth a look. The visitor center is a bit lacking but this is a place worthy of a visit.

“A surprising oasis in Manhattan”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2013

The monument itself is a quick stop - take a few minutes to absorb the peace and quiet inside the massive marble building, then a few more to stroll around the outside and take some pictures. We didn't get to see the visitor center, but Grant is an important and controversial figure in our history, so if you're not already familiar with him, I would allow time for that.

“Beautiful Memorial”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2013

We hopped off of the tour bus at this stop as a spur of the moment visit and were glad we did. The memorial and grounds are beautiful, and the building is opened to visitors every couple of hours. Although not a large building, the architecture is impressive and the area that houses the tombs of General Grant and his wife is beautiful. There are some historic flags and limited memorabilia there as well. The area around the monument is beautiful as well. This is free and only takes 15-30 minutes to see. Don't forget to walk across the street to Riverside Church. It is open for viewing, and the architecture in there is stunning.

“Great piece of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2013

1) it's free. How many things in NYC are? 2) if you happen to arrive at the same time as a bunch of tour buses, wait about 10 minutes. They swarm in, snap photos and are gone. We waited until the place was empty (literally empty) and had a nice conversation with the Park ranger who was awesome: spent time telling my daughter things about General Grant that she had not learned. Worth a visit for sure!!!
