“Informative and beautiful”

Some really interesting items and history that shows the diversity and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas from Patagonia to Canada. A good museum, and it's free!

“small but interesting free museum”
Reviewed 3 December 2011

The National Museum of the American Indian is part of the Smithsonian, and is a neat little museum that might not be worth going out of your way to see, but if you're downtown to see the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, 911 Memorial, etc. it's worth the price, especially since it's free :)

The museum is housed in the old customs house which is an interesting architectural and ornately designed building. There is an interesting exhibit that talks about the custom house and it's roll in commerce in New York and early colonial America.

Two other main exhibit areas show many Native American artifacts from the museum's permanent collection, and another exhibit area shows a temporary Native American artist exhibit. The permanent collection always seems interesting to me, and the temporary exhibit has been hit and miss the few times I've gone there.

You could spend 30 minutes to a couple hours here depending on your interest in Native American things.

PROS:
free
permanent exhibit is interesting

CONS:
small
temporary exhibit is hit and miss
