We went for the art, but also enjoyed strolling through the gardens and trees and gazing at the river. There's a little restaurant halfway between the subway and the museum that would be a nice before or after spot if you make a day of it.

This is a beautiful park to walk thru. Views of the Hudson. The Cloisters is the perfect break for the midtown rush, very peaceful.

I had first visited the Cloisters, home of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Medieval and Renaissance collection, more than 40 years ago and had been meaning to get back since. My spouse had never been. We finally managed to get both of us there along with some family members and loved the whole place. I went for an audio guide, which provided lots of detail about the rooms of the building and some of its permanent works, but I think I would have needed to be at greater leisure (and maybe alone) to have really taken advantage of it. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum also featured some of the current fashion exhibit at the Met, which is about Roman Catholic influence on fashion. The exhibits were stunning and very well integrated into the surroundings. We especially loved the garden full of plants used during medieval times for food, medicine, poison, and more.

Medieval Gardens in Fort Tryon Park. Small gardens and quadrangle that are cultural and charming. Fees are around US$25 but there’s a ‘pay as you wish’ fee for NYC residents. A nice peaceful place on the upper west side of NYC.

This is a beautiful building, with marvellous medieval paintings, artifacts, tapestries, statues. Lovely garden in the cloister with small coffee shop and seating area. Good views across and down the river. Set in a lovely public park too.
