“Good value hotel on the west side”
Reviewed 21 June 2011

We spent 9 days at Hotel Newton and we are absolutely satisfied with our stay. We had the Junior Deluxe Suite and it was large enough for two adults and a baby (with big stroller and his own babycrib). We had two large beds, a small kitchen bench with microwave and refrigerator, a decent sized bathroom aswell as a little separate storage room.
The cleanliness of the room was spotless, even tough they forgot to add more toilet paper a couple of days (we had spare in our luggage so it was not mentioned).

There was a heatwave when we visited NYC so we used the A/C a lot. Unfortunately the A/C was noisy so it couldn't be used during the night. Had to turn it on for some minutes during the night to cool the room down occasionally.

As for the neighbourhood, we got everything we wanted just minutes away. There are plenty of restaurants in the area, and if you are into pizza, Pizza Famiglia on 96th & Amsterdam is the place to go. Best pizza I've ever had!

thank you for your kind words and I am so happy that your trip was a success. Please know that if you ever stay with us and feel that the A/C is a bit noisier than it should be, call our front desk and they will be more than happy to look into the problem and if it cannot be rectified, change the A/C for a brand new unit. We look forward to your next stay with us.

The only negative things I could come up with is that the elevator is indeed really slow and you have to pay extra for the internet connection.

Other than that, this hotel is really bang for the bucks. Friendly staff, large clean rooms with microwave and refrigerators, clean bathrooms, close to subway,...

I recommend this hotel to all my friends

thank you for your comments. I completely agree with you about the elevator. We have one elevator for 9 floors and sometimes during morning rush times and afternoon rush, it becomes a bit of a longer wait. we are working on installing a new elevator and hope to have this in the upcoming year.

My family (2 adults, 2 teens) stayed here in June for a family wedding. We stayed in a sJr Suite with 2 queen beds and although the accommodations were a little tight, the sitting room provided enough breathing space for us to have a very pleasant trip. The hotel is immaculate, wood is polished, corners are clean, just a really nice place. The price is tolerable and actually very good for new york. Although it is upper west side, the subway is right across the street which makes navigating really easy. There are several excellent restaurants close by. By far the best NY hotel I have found to stay at for a weekend trip. Parking isn't too outrageous for new york. We'll be back

We stayed at the Newton Hotel for 5 nights for a short holiday in New York. Four years ago I had stayed in the neighbouring hotel so I knew this was a nice and fairly quiet area of New York.

We arrived at the hotel much later than planned, but the check-in went smoothly and the rooms were very clean and reasonably sized. The room was a bit warm, but the airconditioning fixed this after a while. In the room was a big fridge, microwave and a water boiler. The first night we were kept up by the sounds of our airconditioner and the ones outside the window, but later on these noises were shut out by wearing earplugs. This was really the only downside to our stay.

The beds were clean, the shower worked fine and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The decor was being refurbished at the time we stayed there, but it was no hassle at all.

On top of that the location of the hotel is excellent if you want a bit more quiet, but not too quiet. Near the hotel is a very good Corner Cafe where you can get a lovely breakfast and good coffee. We dined in various restaurants near the hotel and all were good (Pio Pio, Buceo95). In front of the hotel is a subway station and you can get to the busier parts of Manhattan in 10/15minutes.

At the end of our stay The Newton booked a cab to take us to JFK and that's recommendable - it's a bit pricier than a regular cab, but we travelled in style to the Airport.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at the Newton and I'd definitely go back there again in the future.

Well the Hotel Newton makes it affordable...

I was advised by many to pay more and stay Downtown. I ignored the advice and saved $800 by doing so. I paid a mere $27 for a week Subway Pass and easily cruised the city every day and night - unbeatable value - London Transport take note...

The hotel itself was welcoming and friendly, accomodating and pleasant. Rooms were spotless clean every day, quiet and relaxing with no traffic or external noise. It becomes an Oasis after a hards days tourism...

Every possible need is on the doorstep - 96st Station has train stops for both local and express, shops, restaurants, bars and Central Park are all in easy walking distance. There is a Hertz car rental right on the next street so if you are having a twin city holiday - its so easy its not true!

The only minor complaint was the carpets had a doggy smell, but on day two they replaced them and the doggy smell went away! Hence I give this hotel a 5 - Excellent.

Without reservation - book this hotel, visit NYC - and don't fall for the high price stuff in Downtown..

Since I had actually finished my degree in late 2010 and could march in 2011, I stayed here for my Columbia University graduation with my husband and family in May. The hotel is situated in an absolutely great location---near the university, a few blocks to Central Park, the subway, great restaurants like Gennaro, Pio Pio, Acqua, and Carmine's---there's even 2 Starbucks located within a block, Duane Reade, and a diner right downstairs that was excellent. Don't worry if you forget anything on your trip, because everything is at your fingertips. The staff at the hotel was very accomodating. When we checked in, they gave us an upgrade, which I didn't realize at first, but was absolutely grateful that my 80 year old father had a very spacious room! Everything was clean and the rooms that my family and I stayed in had large refrigerators to store drinks and food that we bought. The hotel has tremendous character. You can take the stairs (there are two stairwells) or you can take the elevator. Since this is an older building, the elevator is small and runs at its own pace, but we found the stairs just fine. The bathrooms seemed to have been redone recently and were very nice. We checked all of the beds and linens upon arrival and all were very clean. In the hallways, there was a smell of smoke by only one of our rooms, but we weren't bothered at all as we travel often and there were many people from around the globe. There was a Hertz parking garage around the corner which offered a hotel rate at $27 a night. Given the fact that we have parked often in NYC, this was a bargain rate. Overall, I would recommend the Hotel Newton. The staff was attentive and the place is an absolute charm! Bypass any of the chain hotels any day and stay here!

Room Tip: The rooms we booked had interior views; very quiet

thank you for such a great Review! Let me apologize for the smoke in one of the Hallways. We do our best to make sure that guests do not smoke in the rooms as we are a non-smoking property. the moment we figure the actual room that the smoke is coming from, our Housekeeping department is quick to alert the guest that smoking is prohibited but sometimes of course, we don't succeed. We hope to see you very soon on your next trip to the city.

We recently stayed with extended family for our daughter's med school graduation from Columbia. This location worked out great. The best part about the hotel was the staff. They worked very hard to make sure that we had everything we needed.

We stayed in two deluxe junior suites which had a small separate area with a kitchen area and table and chairs. The rooms were fine for us. This is an older hotel, but our rooms were clean. The bed was very firm, but comfortable, with plenty of pillows and extra blankets provided. The air conditioner worked well, but was noisy.

There is only one small elevator, which was a bit rickety. We occasionally had to wait a bit, especially in the morning.

There were many restaurants within a few blocks. It was a short taxi ride up to the medical school which was perfect. There was also a subway stop right outside the hotel which made it easy for my daughter to get to us.

There was parking nearby for $25/day. They had an internet charge or $5 a day which ran from noon to noon.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting their children at Columbia or any of the other nearby universities. It was a good central location! I only wish we had found it sooner! Compared to some of the other hotels we've stayed in in New York, I felt like we got good value for our money.
