This hotel was great! We had the top floor room that shared a bathroom. I thought this would be some what annoying at times but it was honestly no problem whatsoever! Im pretty sure it's just the 2 rooms that share the one bathroom anyway? No big deal. The room was fine, flatscreen TV with cable, comfortable double bed, microwave and refrigerator, chair & desk, bedside table- all you really need in a hotel that you don't spend all day, every day in right? Yes the AC is a little noisier than most would probably like (my boyfriend didn't sleep too well due to this), however considering your in NYC, this room had NO street noise AT ALL so the AC didn't bother me the slightest! Location is great, 2 min walk to subway that will take you downtown and into all the hustle and bustle.
The only negative I have is that wifi is not included in room rate, we paid $5 each for wifi and BE AWARE it is only valid from noon-noon! We weren't told this and both my boyfriend and I purchased wifi at 7pm(thinking it was atleast 24hrs), went to use it at 12:15pm the next day and it wouldn't connect- asked reception what was going on, they then told us its only valid until noon-no matter what time you pay for it! Grrr!
Overall though, this hotel met my expectations and would stay here in the future.

I can't believe I forgot to post a review of this hotel, where we stayed in July of 2010 for a week-long visit.

The hotel was perfect for our needs. Actually, there was a little glitch when we checked in - they put us in a much smaller room than what we had reserved. Since we had plans that evening, we basically tossed our stuff in the room, noticed that, wow, rooms ARE small in New York, and headed out. By the time we got back, there were no rooms available of the type we had reserved. The desk staff was very apologetic, and resolved the problem the next day. It was no big deal.

The location of this hotel is ideal: the Upper West Side is a great place to be, with all of the great restaurants, close to Central Park, etc., plus, there's a subway station right down the block. Throughout our stay, the staff was very friendly, and the property was spotless.

Next time we visit New York, I will be checking the Newton for availability first!

Our family of 4 (with 12 & 14 year old) really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Newton! We had a very clean and updated smallish room, but I've heard it is large for a NY room. This hotel feels like you are staying in a home, as it is very comfortable and the staff is nice & very accomodating. There is a mini fridge & a microwave in the room and plenty of towels.

Even though it is a far walk from downtown, it is very close to the 96th street subway which is quite convenient. The Manhattan restaurant next door is excellent food that is reasonably priced & very fast service! Down the street is a cool quick pizza place that has much more & there are 2 Starbucks within 2 blocks. Don't forget a stop at one of the local fruit carts- one is up two streets & across the street. Central Park is within walking distance, but it is a bit far to the Met- although we walked there on a hot day.

For the price, we felt like we could not beat this place. The neighborhood is peaceful (for NY) & very nonthreatening, the hotel was very quiet & clean, and we hope to return.

The hotel is perfectly located not even 100 meters away from the 96th street subway station. This makes a huge difference, especially in the evening when back from an exhausting day spent walking in the city. Central Park is also only a few blocks away.
For a very reasonable price, we had an overall very pleasant experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean. The breakfast is not included as there is no restaurant in the hotel but this was not an issue as there are many affordable ones in the neighborhood.
A few minor concerns: repetitive cable TV interruptions, a slow elevator and a noisy air conditioning.

I thank you for your recent comments and hope you visit us again soon. I apologize for the cable interruptions as we did have some cable outages in the area early July.

We stayed in a room without a bathroom in order to save a substantial amount of money. No problems in the sharing. The bathroom was cleaned every day by the staff, and the other hotel guest(s) we shared with were respectful of time, and cleaned up after themselves. I think we were sharing with just 1 other room. Needed a separate key to enter the bathroom, which we found in our room when we checked in. I assume only rooms without bathrooms are given a key to limit its use. Our only suggestion to the management is that it would be nice to have a towel rack installed in the actual hotel room, so we can hang our towels after our morning shower, or after we wash our hands. We got fresh towels every afternoon, but it would be nice to hang them up in the interim periods. We could have hung them in the shared bathroom, but preferred taking them back to our room.

The actual hotel room was updated, nice looking, and clean. A bit small - “cozy”. Lobby was updated and clean too. We were 2 adults in a double bed, which is smaller than at our home (we have a queen), but the bed was comfortable and we liked it. We took soft ear plugs - they worked well to keep the air conditioner noise down. Could not hear any noise from the street.

Location is an excellent 1 minute away from a subway entrance. Nice diner next door for breakfast. We had a wonderful time. Thanks.

Since retiring--and therefore no longer on an expense account when staying in New York--my criteria for a New York hotel have been whittled down to "Is there a bathroom in the room?", "Does it cost less than or not much over $200 per night?" and "Can I be reasonably certain I won't encounter roaches or bed bugs?". Based on the reviews, I was pretty sure the Newton would be acceptable. I was not prepared for it to be as good as it was. The room was quite spacious by New York bargain hotel standards. Everything appears to have been fairly recently redone--all the carpets (lobby, halls and room) seemed new, plush and very clean; the lighting includes recessed cans in the room corners and a new central fixture for brighter light, all on dimmers, plus a separate light for each side of the bed; the baths have all new faux granite tile [I would not have known it was faux but for a couple chips in one tile revealing the ceramic underneath], new toilets, sinks and tub/showers, all of which work perfectly, including the drains; and the bedroom includes a flat screen HDTV, microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker with free coffee and tea. The bed was wonderfully firm, but with a soft topping, so really quite comfortable. The air conditioning in the room was provided by a single in-the-window type unit, which was totally adequate (and I was there during a heat wave in July) to keep the room and bathroom cool. The lobby is really well air-conditioned, which is a treat when you first come in from the street on a hot day. The location is great if you want to be on the Upper West Side--the 96th Street Metro Station is right out the door. Right next door is a really great diner (the Manhattan) which is so clean you could eat off the floor. Not bad for lunch or dinner but really outstanding for a full diner-style breakfast. There is also an excellent tapas restaurant right around the corner (Buceo, 201 W 95th). All in all a delightful surprise.

Very friendly service from the staff - and in general some nice, big and functional rooms.
The breakfast / restaurant was a seperate one and not part of the hotel - but many great eating places in the area.
