“a bit to cool for school”
Reviewed 17 May 2013

hum, MEGA pricey for an average room. Did love the bathrooms, very funky, bedroom was pretty bland and basic. VERY noisy madison av side, weirdly not on friday night but very much so saturday night beep beep of reversing rubbish trucks?? I know you are in NYC but it was noisier than less expensive hotels. the bikes are great fun take them out. We had a nice picnic too (it did cost £100 though!) staff were on the whole a bit as the title suggests "too cool for school", it was definitely THAT look where they analyse if you are wearing the latest fashions or not and god forbid you are in semi "scruffy" attire they will look down at you, NOT classy. A really Classy hotel doesnt do this... and a word of advice you never EVER know that the "scruffy" guy isnt the richest guy in the joint (look at zuckerburg!) BIG mistake. Mind you it was the upper East side so.....

Thank you for sharing your observations and feedback on your recent experience at The Mark. Our customers’ reviews are a valuable resource to ensure we are offering the best product and service. I am happy to hear you enjoyed certain aspects of our hotel, such as our bathrooms, The Mark Bikes, and Picnic in the Park by Jean-Georges. I am however, very concerned that your experience was impacted by a high noise level in your room. I apologize for this, and thank you for bringing this to our attention. While we are located in one of the busiest cities in the world, we pride ourselves on the calm and quiet that our guests enjoy in their rooms. We have made a note of your experience on the Saturday evening of your stay, and will be on the look-out for similar noise from the street moving forward.

I am further concerned about your observations on our staff’s attitude and treatment of guests. If we have, in any way, imparted an unwelcoming sense to you during your stay with us, we sincerely apologize for this. Your feedback is valuable, and comes as a sincere surprise to me, as we understand the importance of maintaining a welcoming environment that transcends all tastes, styles and manner of dress. In fact, the elegant but easy-going atmosphere in our hotel has been a key factor in our success with repeat business. Nevertheless, rest assured we have taken note of your comments and will be even more vigilant in making sure we maintain a welcoming atmosphere.

I had a 5 nights stay in this hotel in 2013 after a previous stay in 2010. I really do not understand what happened to this hotel! In 2010 it was a dream: immaculate and clean rooms, superlative service and very attentive staff, very high end guests...I came back this January and I could not believe to be at The Mark, NYC.
Public areas ( including floors hallways) were dirty and bad mantained.
Room cleanliness was poor and walls, carpet and furnitures seemed to be in bad conditions. We could hear every kind of noise coming form the street and from the hallways and cold air passed trough our window. The heat system was extremely noisy.
We were 3 adults and everyday we had bathrobes, bath towels and bath amenities for 2, also after several requests.
The staff at the reception and at the concierge was very kind but they gave us a lot of wrong infos.
We booked a table for breakfast and dinner at The Mark Restaurant for 5 consecutive days and at the third day we had to cancel all the following reservations: they take care of usual local guests and treated us in a very bad way ( they gave us always the worst and littlest table available, the waiters always tried to charge on our bill the 20 % gratuity for groups of 8 or more even though we were only 3! and so on)
I think to remember that in 2010 this was a SLH hotel and now it is not any more in SLH hotels list! There has to be a reason for that!?
Definitely I will not be back!

Thank you very much for your honest feedback on your stay at The Mark. I appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts on Tripadvisor. I would like to apologize for your overall experience as I am very sorry that you were not satisfied with the service you received during your second visit to the hotel.

I was very disappointed to learn that you thought our floors and hallways were not maintained and that the furniture was not up to standard. At The Mark we are very proud of our Jacques Grange designed furniture and do our best to maintain the quality of every piece in every room.

I am sorry that housekeeping did not provide you with an adequate number of towels and robes, especially given you had made several requests for more to be placed in your room.

It was disheartening to learn that you had to cancel your reservations at the restaurant, at The Mark we do strive to offer each of our guests a flawless experience so we are extremely sorry when inconsistencies in our service occur.

As humbling as it is to receive this criticism, your critique will serve our team well, as we do continually look to find opportunities to improve our levels of service and attention to detail. I would like to reassure you that, while your stay certainly did not meet the highest level of service I know we are capable of, your experience is a rare one – one that I hope you will allow us to improve upon, provided you choose to give us another chance in the near future.

First time at this fabulous hotel, and we loved it. Traveling with my mom is not easy, as she is very particular about details.
And what makes it so fabulous --- everything! Above all, it was the staff and their attention to the guests. No matter who you are, celebrity - or just regular folk like us, you are given the same attention, respect and care. And by the entire staff. From the General Manager, concierge, front desk, housekeepers, valet, security, restaurant staff, --- they were always warm, friendly and helpful. The rooms are lovely. Bathrooms very large with more cabinet and drawer space than any hotel I've stayed in. Located in a quiet and beautiful part of Manhatten. Convenient to shops, restaurants, the park, taxis, etc. No complaints! Mom, who is a professional complainer, loved the Mark. Enough said.

The only bad thing about The Mark is that once you have stayed there other hotels seem disappointing in comparison.

The rooms are very well furnished and decorated to extremely high standards, the staff are helpful, the location is perfect for museums, shopping and Central Park and I and my family have frequently been upgraded which is always appreciated. The bar is great for a quiet drink earlier in the day or for people watching a night and the restaurant wonderful too. I feel utterly pampered from check in to check out. It's pricey but you are getting the best and sometimes that is just what you need.

Loved staying at this large boutique hotel in New York last summer. A very elegant hotel in a great area. Excellent restaurant and a really buzzy bar in the evening - met some really nice local people who use the bar as their local. Would be delighted to stay again the next time we're in NYC.

Most hotels are impersonal but staff training here is exemplary, and all the staff were astonishingly pleasant and genuine. Very close to Central Park and Manhattan Upper East side, so less frantic than downtown NYC. Be warned that if you want the adrenaline rush of Meatpackers or Soho you will not like the sophisticated elegant, quieter Madison Avenue up on 77th street. We liked the fact that with a decent pair of trainers on, you could walk it down to the busy bits or stay out of it for a bit of a break. Taxi drivers seem to have their own rules of the road, and none seem to be the same as any others, so it was preferable to walk! Superb hotel

Room Tip: We had sixth floor overlooking 77th street which was good. Some rooms have a courtyard view which I...

Excellent stylish Boutique Hotel.Top Upper East side location between Madison and Central Park. Great for a run in the morning or a stroll in the afternoon. Easy to walk over to the West side. The rooms and bathrooms are designed beautifully and practical too. you will find all amenities you need. Delicious food, I love the shaved fennel salad with arugula and parmiggiano with lemon-oliveoil dressing. For breakfast I recommend the waffle rather than the french toast. Staff is so friendly that one easily feels at home.
