“Very New York”
Reviewed 16 April 2011

I only stayed one night but liked it a lot. Very modern design, i guess you could call it industrial chic (bare concrete ceilings etc). Still very comfortable - especially the bed and the bathroom. My only gripe as with many modern design hotels is the lighting for wich you either need a manual or a PhD and which is always a bit too dark for anything other than sleeping. Would definitely come back again.

I reserved a one bedroom studio suite and lets say literally it felt as though I was back at home in my loft condo. If you're looking for the concrete meets wood with high end modern fixtures (think DWR) this is the place for you. My suite was spacious and the loft style bed was comfy. This place is all about the locals. The restaurant was excellent. I ate a lot of sushi which was very fresh. The bar/terrace/nightclub is beautiful but its definitely for the DJ spinning type. If your up for that than you'll have a blast. The 2nd floor lounge was nice a DJ spins late night on weekends and plays some very upbeat 70's tunes. Plus there's a terrace on the 2nd floor.
The service was good. Not an overly super friendly place but then again I'm not there to be best friends with the staff. So if you want them to make you feel like family your bettter off just hanging with the locals. This place seems to attract a young at heart crowd.
My favorite thing about this place is the location. Love the neighborhood. It was very lively. And for you die hard that love Whole foods there's one around the corner.

Room Tip: Room 401 quiet with pool views

I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Our stay was wonderful. We had 2 rooms, and both were clean, nicely decorated, had nice views and were very comfortable. The service was outstanding... from the reception desk, the valet, the men who handled our bags and got us taxis. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Overall, a great experience.

Over the years I've stayed at many Thompson hotels on both coasts (Roosevelt, GuildHall, Thompson St, 6 Columbus) but this was by far the most disappointing experience. While the rooms are large and well designed, I was staying in a corner room #1000 with balcony (great views of LES) and found the noise (til around 2am) from the bar/restaurant and from the hallways more disturbing than that from Allen Street and nearby Houston. Admittedly I had jetlag from a 22 hour flight from Australia but hotel-sponsored noise is the last thing you want anywhere when you have to front up for a two way conference. While the staff are pleasant, the hotel simply lacks ambience of any kind, whether it's in the lobby or the bar/restaurant. Not to the usual Thompson standard. And when are they going to implement a loyalty scheme as they continue to expand? I won't be staying here next time I'm in NY.

The hotel is a bit more minimal than we would usually go for but fitted New York to a T. The room was on the 15th floor and had the most amazing which started at the Brooklyn Bridge and finished past the Empire State building. The floor to ceiling glass and wrapp around balcony ensured that the view could be enjoyed to the maximum.

The shower was amazing and the Kiehls products were also very nice. The bed was huge and made it hard to get up was very welcome after a hard day sight seeing and evenings out.

The hotel has a gym area and spa which were able to use before going to the airport as our flight back was at night.

Finally the staff were brilliant. Very friendly and helpful.

Would like to stay at Thmpson LES again in the summer to use the roof top pool and to see that view again.

My boyfriend and I just completed a weekend stay at the Thompson LES. Let me start with the positives:
--We really liked the industrial-chic decor and the arty accents in the different rooms (more on this below in the negatives). It's not everyone's cup of tea, but hey, you (should) know what you're getting into when booking this hotel.
--The entire staff -- from check-in and bell hop to the cleaning crew -- was warm and very helpful.
--The location is the perfect base for exploring the wonderful restaurants and the lively bars nearby. Btw, if you want to go to the Clinton St. Bakery on a weekend, wake up early and put your name down when it opens, come back to the hotel and sleep for another 2 hours, then go back and your table will be ready.
--The bed and couch are very comfy, and the bathroom is quite nice if a bit claustrophobic.

Now the negatives. We arrived on Friday evening and were given a room on the 7th floor, right next to the elevators and across from the exit of the bar/club on the floor. As many other reviewers have noted, if you're staying on floors 6-8 on a weekend, you WILL hear everything. You will hear the ding when elevators arrive, the thumping music when people open the doors to the club, the drunken chatter of those who linger in the hallway.

I went down to the lobby at around 1:30am and requested a room change. The front desk guy was very apologetic and very quickly switched me to a larger room, a queen suite. Still, he commented how they've had a lot of noise issues with the 7th floor rooms. To which I wanted to say, "Then why did you put me there in the first place, especially on a weekend?"

So, all in all a very good experience despite the short drama. But make sure you avoid the 7th floor!!

Positives:
Amazing location, where Lower East Side meets East Village and SOHO. Great restaurants, entertainment, culture and shopping nearby.

Room 1403.
King Jr. Suite (I think). was spacious with sitting area, large flat screen TV, and great view (southeast) from the 14th floor. I was told this was an upgrade from a Deluxe King. Bed was comfortable. Trendy appearance to room. Modern design. The bed had an attractive lit landscape. The slate or marble bathroom was attractive and functional. We had a large shower with a rain-type spout.

Service
Front desk was excellent. We needed an ironing board and iron in a hurry and they sent one right up. There is a concierge service and we received an excellent restaurant recommendation. The daily NY Times was appreciated

Public Areas
We did not eat in the restaurant, but the cocktail lounge looked attractive. Second floor lobby was confortable. There is a trendy rooftop lounge that had a DJ. The lounge is for members only and hotel guests. I thought that was a nice gesture because I remember another trendy hotel in the meatpacking district that cleared the guests out of their top floor lounge at 9 PM so that others could be rejected at the velvet rope. The treatment here is a bit more standard among good hotels. The crowd was mostly in their 20s. It was not for us, but looked like fun.

Negatives
The tower looks like an eyesore to me. It stands out in stark concrete. A north-south view would have been more interesting so that one could view the skyscrapers in midtown and the harbor below, but the orientation of the building is a minor criticism and the view was interesting to explore. The room also looked a bit stark and industrial with the unfinished concrete ceiling. I guess that is a matter of taste.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to use the hotel phone and the complicated shower. The bed had a lit landscape above it. I had to fumble around with every light switch Some instruction would have helped.

Free internet would be nice. The hotel is pricey but not out of character for the area. I would call it an average value.

All-in-all, we would like to stay here again.
