“Top location at an affordable price”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

New York is such an expensive city, it's so hard to find a decent place at an affordable price. That's where this hostel comes in handy. It's clean, very well located and very convenient. Rooms are quite small, but you won't spend much time there with New York just outside!

I was pleasantly surprised by the YMCA. It appears more like a halls of residence than your average hostel, with lots of small single rooms and just a tiny lounge and kitchen. When I arrived the check in staff were friendly. I stayed in a single room on the 4th floor. There was not too much noise from the building and the noise from the street I got used to pretty quickly. The room was clean enough and nice to be able to relax in there with your own TV. I was concerned about the one bathroom and one shower room for so many guest rooms although this did not prove to be a problem over the 5 days I stayed. The hostel is worth staying at for the location. The grand central station and Rockefeller Centre are close by and some good deli's around the corner so you can eat well on a budget. It was also pretty easy to get there from the airport using the AirTrain and Subway. One improvement would be to have more than one computer for guests in the reception area.

Room Tip: Kitchen is located on the 4th floor

I've being staying at Vanderbilt YMCA several times for the last twenty years. I am happy to see how the facilities are improving bit by bit. The latest renovation included the the washrooms and the bedrooms. I was this time on the 4th floor, and it was very comfortable. And on top of that it's not just the accommodation facilities, you can experience how this institution is serving the community with the sporting facilities too. Congrats!

Room Tip: Rooms and washrooms on the 4th floor have been renovated

If you don't book directly over their homepage you can get good deals, same prices as the hostels but you get a private room (but still bunk beds). The location is great, safe and lot of places are in walking distance. Rooms are small but you probably fall asleep right as you come back from a whole day of sightseeing. Staff is helpful. Would book it again.

If you're on a budget it's simple but ideal for a few nights stay. Security is always on duty and it seemed a safe place. The things that let it down are that staff aren't too friendly and on check out theres a pointless and difficult machine to allow you to store luggage.

New York city is traditionally an expensive place so fairly reasonable accomodations are hard to find. The YMCA Vanderbilt is a nice option if you are on a budget trip.
The hotel is clean and organized. Its main lobby is spacious and there's a gym which you can use during most part of the day and later shower in the hotel dresser.
The rooms are rather small but convinently equipped with air conditioning and a fridge.
Shower rooms and restrooms are outside the room but that poses no problem as they are normally tidy and clean.
I'd say the only drawback about the YMCA Vanderbilt is that rooms are available for check in after 3pm only so if you arrive earlier you have to wait. Overall the hotel is OK.

Room Tip: Best rooms are those until the 4th floor as the wireless internet only works well up until the 4th f...

I had a very good three week stay at the hostel with a comfortable room that included TV and Fridge and close to the shared bathroom and showers. I loved being able to use the gym which has two pools as well as equipment and lots of classes and was able to do water aerobics several nights. They are reasonably priced and the staff was very nice to me. The location is incredible just a block from the United Nations and the East River and a quick 10 minute or less walk to Grand Central station. The wifi was free and they have two lounges for relaxing outside your room and there is also a large laundry room where you can wash and dry clothes for free a great advantage. I would recommend it to any budget travel who wants to be in Midtown.
