The Vanderbilt YMCA
Reviewed 18 May 2010

The only disadvantage of this hotel is that there is no running water in the rooms. I don't care much about en suite rooms. As long the room is clean and the matras is good you won't hear me complaining. But sometimes it can be handy to have running water in your private area: for a quick toothbrush or for a quick wash of your hands. It's not so comfortable to walk in the hallways in your pyama's every time for these quick needs. I expected the hotel to be more basic though. But fortunately there was a tv-set in the room and daily I found 2 fresh towels on by bed. Also my bed was made every day. The last timeI stayed here was about 20 years ago. But the place looks much cleaner now. Most of the other hotel guests were travellers like me. So no bums as hotel guests. And there is the gym. I am not a sporty type of person, but all of a sudden I became one! Every day before I had my evening shower I hit the trim devices. All in all: free use of the gym, public phones in the hall, close to the center, clean and reasonable priced: a good hotel for me. The staff is not very friendly however, but they act strict to the rules and treat you as a normal person.

After finishing my summer Work & Travel in WI, I started to travel around. My last stop was NYC. I stayed that place about 9 days. It has a great location with an affordable price. It's very close to 5th Ave, Central Park and Times Square. Rooms are OK, WC's and showers are for common use. This place has a good security. If I wanna visit NYC again, I'll stay in that place again.

Great location, very close to 5th Ave, walking distance from central park and Times Square. Staff were friendly, room was clean on arrival and cleaners came everyday to change bedding and towels. The rooms are basic, there are shared bathrooms, although there was a large sink and mirror in the room. As accommodation goes the Westside YMCA is better as the bathrooms are newer and there are more showers, but I doubt you would be able to get the same location for the price.

I took a school group this past week to Manhattan, and we stayed at the Vanderbilt. We had a selection of rooms on 4 different floors (the place was booked solid for the week). On arrival, staff were friendly, helpful and courteous, taking us through the security procedures, helping us with rooming lists, and giving out maps to everyone staying. Throughout the stay, if a pupil lost a key they were found by the regular security patrols. If we had questions, they were answered in a helpful way by the busy desk staff. They clearly deal with school groups a lot, and retained patience and a sense of humour with excited teenagers.

The rooms are variable. This is one star accomodation for a reason - my individual room had peeling paint, a horrible bed, a thin blanket that crackled with static when you touched it, a fridge, tv and desk. The radiator also didn't work. But with that said, the group bathrooms were clean (really well maintained - not just acceptable) and the showers were always to the same standard. Rooms on other floors varied, as did the bathrooms. The best rooms we found were the quads, with the doubles on the tenth floor also being OK (although none of them are by any means luxurious). Some of the kids said their floor's bathrooms were frequently busy, but none of them complained about dirt or bad smells while there. The place is very clean.

Downstairs in the lobby is a free cardio gym, with tons of machines, open 5AM until 11Pm to work off some of the jetlag. There is also a pool in the basement. There is free wi-fi at the hostel - ask at the desk for a code. This worked first time, and was also really useful to have.

The Vanderbilt isn't massively convenient to the subway (three or four blocks to Grand Central) but is a fifteen minute walk to Times Square, making it ideal for the many tourist groups that go there. For it's price, location and helpful service, I can overlook a thin mattress in a cold room. Recommended.

We choose this hostel because it was very affordable for mid-town Manhattan. Though, with some research you should be able to find a hotel for the price of a private room at this hostel. The location is a bit out of the way, but not too bad, and it's in a safe and quiet neighbourhood. The rooms are about what you'd expect from a hostel. The biggest complaint I have about the place is the brutal service. There were just a couple other people in front of us in line when we arrived, but we literally waited 3 hours to check in. They said they were having computer problems. Well, even so, they should have had an alternate way of recording the information they needed. It's not so much fun to stand in a cramped lobby for hours and hours. That being said, if I couldn't find any cheaper place to stay, I might stay here again, and hope they've solved their computer issues.

Stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA for three nights following a business trip. As I just needed a place to crash for the weekend, the $63 rate was too hard to pass up, especially considering most hotels in midtown were going for $400+.

The rooms are definitely snug with a twin bed, dresser, mirror, fridge, small closet, and 15" TV. The worst part was the radiator making an incessant clanging noise throughout the night. Free WiFi if you get a code from the front desk. The bathrooms aren't too bad, but the one shower room can get a bit of a wait, but, if you're in a hurry, you can shower in the gym in the basement, or the men's restrooms have two showerheads in a room just off the bathrooms.

Overall, not bad...but if you can snag a 'normal' hotel on Priceline for a few bucks more, it's probably worth it.

Stayed at one of the single rooms, the room was clean but small with a tiny window. Shared bathrooms were mostly clean although a bit drafty. I didn't deal with many staff members but the reception was friendly and helpful.

The Y has a laundry room on site which is great if you're staying for awhile. Just make sure you have quarters as there were no change machines. The free wifi was fast and the gym was very well equipped although it gets crowded on weekends.

Security was very good for a budget hotel and the location is great. I usually stay on the west side but I loved the Y.
