I didn't know this museum existed until I saw something about the Gilded NY exhibit. We enjoyed the exhibit very much but it was much smaller than we expected. We also enjoyed the 30 minute "History of NY" film shown on another floor. A nice museum to visit, and it's right near Central Park so you can have a nice stroll afterwards.

We passed the Museum on the bus a couple of times before deciding to stop in. It is amazing. There are a limited number of exhibits, but each one covers its subject in depth. We not only enjoyed seeing the displays, we learned something new from each of them. The staff were well informed and friendly, and the gift shop is a great source of books and other materials. Loved our visit and will come back.

Current (June 2014) exhibits are all fascinating. Palaces for the People analyzes the tile architecture of the Guastavino's, candid photos from Coney Island, the history of activism in NY, graffiti art, and Gilded Art photos. Take your time and enjoy all the exhibits.

One would think that a museum named "Museum of the City of New York" would be all about the City History. Not so. Surprisingly, for this visit there was a variety of graffiti art and architecture along with art of the guilded age. Interesting. The video was excellent on the history of New York. So expect the unexpected.

Quite diverse collections to spend a morning or afternoon leisurely visiting. And, there's a bus which can take you crosstown over to the Cathedral of St. John The Devine or all the way up to The Cloisters, too.
