“Hidden gem! Always has great exhibits!”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

Though this gem of a museum is on Fifth Ave., it is a bit farther up than museums like the Met, so I think it gets overlooked. Definitely check out what exhibits is has. I always find something that I didn't even know that I was interested in!

“Good for a couple of quiet hours on a free day”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

Not your typical large museum. This is a small one which actually makes it easy for one to complete. The museum has photo exhibitions depicting NY, it's people and their life.

“Not a traditional history museum, and 1/3 was closed”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

This place is OK, but it's title is misleading as it is not a traditional history type museum. I'd describe it more as an artsy socially interpretive display relating to New York. The exhibit of street art/graffiti was good, as was the Guilded area and old photos of Coney Island. However, it's basically just a bunch of aspects of New York as interpreted by art, not a traditional museum display. Likewise there was a display on social activism, but it wasn't really directly NYC specific. I suppose it would be good if you're into that sort of thing, but not if you are expecting a traditional museum.

More annoying was that significant parts of the venue were closed due to renovation (about a 1/3). They are still happy to charge full price for entry though. Young children will be very bored here, though they did hand out a little treasure hunt map to try to keep them occupied.

“Informative small museum with NYC-specific exhibits”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

This small museum is housed in a beautiful facility and showcases various exhibits related to NYC. The current exhibits on Guastavino's tilework, Wong's collection on graffiti, Aaron Rose's Coney Island photography were our favorites, although all exhibits were well done. A worthwhile museum to visit to gain insight into what makes New York City what it is, past, present, and looking toward the future.

Our tween and teenager were a bit out of place, as this was mostly an adult crowd, but even they found interesting exhibits with the Gilded Age and graffiti presentations. Would not recommend for those with little kids in tow, as the museum is more quiet and refined, and does not have exhibits catering to children's interests.

“Good place to start your trip”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

I made the mistake of leaving this visit until the end of my trip. If I'd seen it at the beginning it would have helped me to understand the city a little better.

The twenty minute film is worth the admission charge alone. Using maps and images from the museum's collection, it takes you through all the phases of the city's development, right up to the present day. Fascinating. Its a lovely building and there's a good shop and an air-conditioned cafe over-looking Central Park.
