If you want to get a feel for the minutiae of New York life through the years, this is hands-down the place to go. Currently, there's a fantastic hip-shot photography exhibit of images taken between 1961-1963 at Coney Island which is magnificent, and I deeply respect a museum that works to preserve graffiti as an art form, and as a form of political and social expression.
When I went, school groups were participating in a hip-hop dance workshop on the front courtyard that was loads of fun to watch, and the kids were having an awesome time. Excellent museum.
