If you want to get a feel for the minutiae of New York life through the years, this is hands-down the place to go. Currently, there's a fantastic hip-shot photography exhibit of images taken between 1961-1963 at Coney Island which is magnificent, and I deeply respect a museum that works to preserve graffiti as an art form, and as a form of political and social expression.

When I went, school groups were participating in a hip-hop dance workshop on the front courtyard that was loads of fun to watch, and the kids were having an awesome time. Excellent museum.

I believe this was one of our favorite attractions. We had a blast posing with the stars and felt like kids running through the museum to see who else was there. Fantastic!!!!

If you enjoy local history, fabulous art, politics then this is the place to go in NYC. They change the exhibits quite often and this time around it was a home run all the way. All exhibits were amazing and if you are looking for a 90- 120 minute stop then this is perfect. Hats off to the curators also- the Worlds Fair exhibit was a tough act to follow but the new shows on the beautiful NYC tile work and graffiti artists were brilliant! Plus its a $1 min entry fee and you gotta love that.

The Museum of the City of New York is located on the Museum Mile (as well as the Metropolitan Museum, the Frick Collection, the Jewish Museum, the Guggenheim and others) on Fifth Avenue on the East Side across the Central Park.

It is a history and art museum and its main goals are to preserve and present the history of New York City, and its people and to educate the public in relation to diversity, heritage and distinctiveness.

The building itself is gorgeous designed in neo-Georgian style, with niches in the facade.
The museum's collection is huge but unfortunately, when I visited it many galleries were under renovation. It includes paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs which feature New York City and its residents, costumes, decorative objects and furniture. In a way, New Yorkers’ lifestyles.

The exhibitions Palaces for the people and the art of structural tile by Gustavino, In a world of their own (Coney Island photographs) by Aaron Rose, Activist New York, City as canvas (Graffiti art) and Gilded New York were all excellent! I really enjoyed them because each exhibit covers its subject in depth and you can learn a lot.

There was also a wonderful doll’s house on display.

Not pricey nor a traditional museum. An excellent option, however. In my opinion, it is worthwhile visiting it if you are interested in gaining an insight into what makes New York City what it is and to understand the city’s past, present and coming future as a Salad Bowl.

Photo-friendly so don´t forget your camera! And take your time to enjoy!

We found the graffiti exhibit compelling and really enjoyed the photography exhibit of Coney Island. Another treat was the exquisite doll house on display.
