“inn on 23rd an inn-viting place”
Reviewed 7 April 2005

The favourable reviews which encouraged us to book at the Inn on 23rd were, for the most part, spot on. Once you get past the quaintness and uniqueness of a country-style inn on one of the busiest and noisiest streets in Manhattan, the most dominant impressions are those of attention to detail and cleanliness. The cleaning staff is exceptional, the hardwood floors are buffed to a high gloss and the ornate shower curtains were even taken out, replaced and dry-cleaned during our seven-day stay. Sure, there are some street people next door, outside the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic church, but this is, after all, New York. They have a right to this city just as much as visitors do. If you want a sanitized version of the world, go visit Disneyland. The Chelsea district offers a remarkable cross section of this multi-cultural city and is right in the thick of everything. Granted, 23rd Street is clamourous, with constant traffic most of the day and sirens through the night, but the white noise machine on the bedside table and our air conditioning system dampened most of the din. (Our "canopy bed room" faced directly on 23rd). What's more, our king-sized bed was so inviting and comfortable that we slept like babes. The library truly lived up to its name -- a welcomed retreat in which to rest, kick back, sample the honour bar, study and plan the next installment of our great New York adventure. If there is one slight quibble it's breakfast. Nothing remarkable, with the exception of the banana bread. The fruit salad was ordinary but the ingredients were always fresh and the orange juice was freshly squeezed, not prepared from concentrate. In this price range, you can't do much better -- and you can certainly do a lot worse -- elsewhere. Kudos to Annette and her staff for making the Inn on 23rd one of the reasons why New York, New York is a helluva town!

I stayed at the Inn after reading all of the great reviews posted by others. Personally, I was disappointed. While the inn is definitey cozy, and the staff is friendly, there are some serious flaws:

1. The room is incredibly noisy!!! It's right next door to a shelter, so throughout the time there we heard some people shouting and screaming. It was pretty annoying. The room is not sound proofed as other NYC hotels are, so we clearly heard all the yelling for hours.

2. Something was wrong with our toilet. It also made annoying noises all night. We had to keep getting up to fiddle with it.

3. The room is COLD. You can't control the heat so you're stuck with the temperature.

4. Breakfast is incredibly disappointing. Weak coffee, some thin bread, and unripened fruit. Although there was a good walnut cake.

THe staff is fairly friendly. The library room is cozy for late night wine drinking.

All in all, I wouldn't stay here again.

The Inn on 23rd offers an intimate setting in the big city. Friendly but not intrusive staff get you oriented. The "Cabin Room" we stayed in was spacious, with a Queen sized bed and a fold-out sofa. Furnishings are comfortable and unique. No cookie cutter hotel furniture here. The second floor library/breakfast room is comfortable and sparkling clean and accomodates lots of guests in a variety of seating. Newspapers and TV are available in this common use room, and the wall of windows overlooks 23rd street. The Inn is convenient to two different subway stops, accessing different lines. A collection of member passes to Manhattan museums is available at the front desk, free to guests (quite a value, what with MOMA's new $20.00 admission charge), first come first serve. The Chelsea neighborhood is convenient to some great antique venues and some cute vintage clothes shops.

We just stayed at the Inn on 23rd this weekend and it was great. The staff was friendly, the location great and people were able to get to know each other and exchange city finds in the library over breakfast or early evening cheese and wine. There is a subjway stop just on the corner which made it very easy to get around. The only suggestion I would give is to ask for a room off the street. You are still going to hear traffic (it is NYC after all) but it would be reduced greatly if off the street a bit.

We're back at work after our weekend stay at The Inn on 23rd and still congratulating ourselves on having the good fortune to find it and the good sense to book it. Our son lives in NYC and we make the trip a few times a year to visit with him. We have stayed in hotels in Midtown, Greenwich Village, and the Financial district, but the Inn beats them all. Lewis was very welcoming and warm when we checked in, the room was comfortable and reasonably quiet, the whole place sparkled everywhere we looked, the Library was fantastic, and we even had a cat to scratch behind the ears to take the place of the ones we left at home! When we got back in on Saturday night after a very full day, there was the simple pleasure of ending the day with tea and cookies. The big chains could take a few lessons from them. We'll definitely be back again.

I spent 4 nights in the Inn and I was not disappointed. Nice rooms (I stayed in the Suite Room, next time I will ask for a back room...the city is to noisy), the staff was nice. The only negative point was the breakfast...well at least from a Portuguese point of view. Any way I will comeback to this cozy B&B in NY.
