When I checked into the Ace Hotel, I felt really, really old. The dark lobby was filled with hip, attractive 20-something New Yorkers, the music was cool and loud, and everything seemed crowded. I asked the guy manning the desk to put me in the quietest room he had, "The one you'd give grandparents." He obliged and my husband and I ended up in a large (by Manhattan standards) room that was so comfortable and quiet that we fell right asleep. The next morning we had coffee from the in-lobby Stumptown, followed by a heavenly breakfast at the Breslin, and found the lobby to be still crowded but so warm and inviting. I can see why people gather at this hotel -- it's beautiful and full of good food and energy, but it's also a haven from the city.
The location is convenient to Penn Station but doesn't have that Midtown vibe. You can find good food and bars easily around the Ace -- but they are just as easily found inside the hotel.
