“It only keeps getting better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2011

Maybe I should not talk too well about this place or it will get crowded when I come again.
I have stayed here several times. On my most recent stay, I noticed that they have renovated the bathrooms which now include even a hair dryer. They are renovating now the other half of the building, it seems that they are always working on improving it.
It seems also that the employess have received some training. While on previous occasions their service was mostly dry and impersonal, this time everyone was corteous and welcoming.
You can't beat this hostel for accomodation in NY with a great location (1 square away from the subway, clean rooms, safety, and individual lockers in the rooms -- spacious enough to accomodate a large bag!
While in recent years a number of other options have appeared in Manhattan that are close competitor to this one in features (as Jazz on the Park, etc), this one is still the best in general for features and price.
I like the bunkers because they always give you a chance to meet one or two persons who will be willing to make new acquaintances. As with all shared rooms, there is a risk that someone will snore or do something else, but I would stay here again. I will grade it as average because it is not luxury accomodation, but value for the money is great.

Room Tip: If you want to increase your chance or meeting new people stay in the rooms with the most bunkers

The shared dorm rooms are inexpensive - especially considering the hostel's NYC location, and proximity to the subway. (I had no problem getting to the hostel via the subway from Penn Station (Amtrak).) With multiple grocery stores within easy walking distance - including a Whole Foods - and an expansive kitchen, saving money on food is also doable. There was ample refrigerator and freezer space, but if you're staying several days I recommend buying or bringing some food storage containers. The sole blender wasn't working the first night, but I reported it to one of the cleaning crew, and it was fixed by the next night. (I've learned the hard way to always test the blender BEFORE dumping in my smoothie fixings.)

The dorm room had a funky smell, but was otherwise reasonably clean. As with other hostels, I suggest bringing your own lock, hangers, pillowcase, shower shoes, quick-dry towel (I have a bamboo hand towel that's great), ear plugs, and eye shades. The free WiFi doesn't extend to the dorm rooms, but was sufficiently fast in the downstairs lounges and dining area. The whole was blessedly (but not overly) air-conditioned given that the weather reached the high 90's during my stay; I succumbed to heat exhaustion tramping between the convention center and the subway, so I spent my last 24 hours recovering in the cool confines of the hostel. One of the lounges was configured as a study and work area, so I plugged in and worked on my computer.

Room Tip: If you're not up to clambering up to an upper bunk in a shared dorm room, be sure to ask for a l...

I was in a 8 bed shared girls room. Breakfast is not included for these rooms.

The hostel rooms and bathrooms were very clean. As were the communal area. Large kitchen with all the utensils you need to make a dinner.

Only disappointing thing was the internet. You could only log in for 20min at a time and would always cut out. May not seem like a big deal but when you are trying to skype home to let people know you are safe or even using Whatsapp to send messages it can be very frustrating.

Extremely close to subway and I found walking to and from the station at night to be safe. Great pizza place across the road.

Lockers were provided but you need to bring your own lock and also no power points in the lockers like other hostels.

Some staff were very helpful, others were not.

Lots of free and cheap activities to do.

2 blocks away from Tom's restaurant (for those Seinfeld fans)

This place costs easily double most hostels in the states cost, triple+ elsewhere. Very big with little atmosphere. Free internet frustratingly slow and most people are tapping away on laptops rather than get to meet people. Massive snorer in my dorm, which is odds on if you share with 12 people...

My husband and I and another couple shared a room at this hostel, it was fantastic. We were able to walk down to Broadway for breakfast, and then walked to Central Park. The subway was very close and easy to use. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of our room and private bathroom. Will certainly stay if we are ever in New York again. We would never consider staying at anything other than YHA Hostels, we've stayed all round the world in them and never had any problems. Because the cost is lower than hotels it gives us more to spend in the City we are visiting, we are usually out for most of the time sightseeing, so really only need a bed and somewhere to shower, so the hostels are ideal. We are both retired now, and look forward to staying somewhere different in coming years.

I was in NYC on business, some of the meetings were in the hostel, actually. The large ballroom of this heritage building has been converted and was a great space for our conference. I found the location to be great, very close to the subway line and Central Park, so I could quickly get anywhere I needed to but was also able to explore the nearby Park and the great attractions that surround it. The hostel staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the hostel has some organized event happening every night so it's easy to meet other travellers to explore with. The rooms were probably the cleanest and best-equipped I've ever seen and the bathrooms were just renovated before I arrived so they were impeccable as well. I highly recommend staying at this hostel to anyone, the value-for-dollar is very good.

We loved this place. The rooms were clean, the linen was fresh, and the water was hot. There is a 24 hour grocery store a block away, plus several fruit vendors within a 1 minute walk. Central Park was a 5 minute walk away.

We'd never been to New York before, and the information desk staff were amazingly helpful.

There is a large patio and lawn so you can enjoy your meals outside.

I think the only downside was that the kitchen was crowded, and only 3 of the 6 stoves were functional, so sometimes we had to wait to be able to cook meals.
