“Like Europe, but in Chelsea”
Reviewed 21 August 2012

We love NYC, and have come to love staying in Chelsea, for many reasons. Chelsea Pines Inn is not by any means "elegant," but if you like warm hospitality, European-style breakfast, vintage movie posters and "location, location, location," check it out. In recent years we have stayed at classy and expensive (Mandarin Oriental, Iroquois, Sofitel), and Chelsea Pines Inn is not that. What it is, is hip, fun, quieter than midtown, and leaves you with plenty of money for theater and dining. The owner, Jay, loves to make people happy and everyone on his staff knows how he expects them to perform. They were all so gracious and accommodating; we felt like they captured the essence of Southern hospitality. But, in the South, Murray's Bagels and the Chelsea Market are just a wish. Here, they are right out the door. Mark and Rita Murov

My husband Stuart and I had the pleasure of spending two nights at the Chelsea Pines Inn during a recent brief trip to New York City. We needed a comfortable but affordable hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood, and we were attracted to the favorable reviews for Chelsea Pines Inn. I have to admit we were a little skeptical of any establishment with such overwhelmingly positive reviews, but I'm here to tell you: it's all TRUE!
First and foremost, the LOCATION is excellent, within convenient walking distance to the High Line, Chelsea Market, and many attractive bars and restaurants. We spent our entire time exploring the immediate neighborhood on foot, but there's a subway stop right at the corner if you're planning to venture further afield.
Next on the list are COMFORT and CLEANLINESS. The towels and bed linens were of very good quality, and the entire hotel was spotlessly clean -- breakfast area, lobby, etc.
Now, let's hear it for PROFESSIONAL, ATTENTIVE STAFFING. The front desk staff folks (led by the indomitable Jay Lesiger) were a joy to deal with -- knowledgeable, welcoming, helpful -- and all members of the support staff were personable and industrious. Clearly, everyone who works here ENJOYS working here, and that's not so common these days.
Now for the EXTRA SPECIAL FEATURES. We were traveling light (no laptop), so we LOVED the business center on the second floor, where we were able to have free access to the Internet and our email accounts - no hassles or hidden charges. Without a doubt, though, the BEST "amenity" at Chelsea Pines Inn is the resident cat, Charlie, who visited us in our room each night and greeted us in the breakfast area each morning. We miss our four cats dearly when we travel, so having a "loaner" available when we're away from home is a real bonus!
Note that if you're accustomed to staying in corporate hotels or franchise establishments, you might find the rooms and bathrooms at CPI to be a bit small, but hey, this is New York City -- you'd pay dearly for those larger spaces. What impressed us was that, although the room and bathroom were small, everything you might need was right there: a sturdy wooden dresser, ample closet space (with good quality hangers), a nicely-designed walk-in shower, adequate surfaces for toiletries and accessories, a tiny fridge (just right for beer and wine), a well-designed bathroom area, and a large flat-screen TV. I might suggest the addition of a towel rod outside the bathroom, to encourage guests to air-dry their towels for re-use the next morning. Also, a row of wall hooks would be useful in winter, as a place to hang scarves and coats (not that we had this problem in July!).
Another expected pleasure is the landscaped garden area behind the inn -- quite a luxury to see at this price point, and a great place to sit enjoying coffee and breakfast in the morning. Our room (on the back of the inn, overlooking the garden) was very quiet, and we appreciated the always-secure access from the street into the front foyer.
All in all, we had a great experience staying at CPI, and we've already recommended it to several friends who are considering trips to NYC. We'll definitely stay there on our next trip to NYC - and the next one, and the next one!

Room Tip: Our room on the back of the inn was very quiet, so I would recommend this if you're a light slee...

This was our second visit to Chelsea Pines after staying previously about five years ago. This time we returned from our honeymoon and stayed in one of the suites. We had a very friendly checkin with recommendations on local restaurants, shops and getting around town. We also didn't need to worry about getting our bags up the stairs which was really helpful.

The room had a seperate living area and bedroom and a very large bathroom and shower which appears to be quite new. There's also a fridge in the room with a wet bar and good storage for clothes. We had an issue on checkin with the airconditioning but Troy and his team ensured that the problem was rectified and that our visit was a pleasure. All the staff really went out of their way throughout our nine nights to ensure we were having an excellent stay.

The breakfast is plentiful, good selection of bagels, breads, muffins, cakes, juice, cereals etc. The kitchen is open until 11pm for coffee and snacks. The location is second to none, located right in the centre of Chelsea, Greenwich and the Meatpacking Districting, a short walk from numerous great restaurants, bars, Chelsea Market and The Highline (a must see). The area has progressed a lot in the last five years and is better than ever and seems to be getting better again.

We came back on our first full day in NYC to a dozen roses in our room as a honeymoon gift and also received another gift on our checkout which was a really nice way to end our stay.

Room Tip: Go for a suite or superior deluxe for extra space

I stayed here in early July, and cannot fault the hotel or the staff (Jubel, in particular). I was travelling alone and having a base like this was brilliant. Sure the room was small but (a) this is NYC and (b) everything in the room was lovely, great quality linens, super comfy bed, and the room was SO quiet! I'll be back, definitely.

I have stayed in hotels all over Manhattan and I will search no more. This is my new home in NYC. Stayed there last month in the Rock Hudson room with a friend and it was roomier than many NYC apartments. Loved the little terrace downstairs, the fresh baked cookies and the cat. And Jay is a delight-- especially his matching tie and glasses.

By all means, check in to the Chelsea Pines Inn.. After traveling to NYC for over thirty years, I finally found the best kept secret!
It's on West 14th in the heart of the meat packing district, the Sky line, and Chelsea... Its walking distance to SOHO, china town and Little Italy...
The Inn is SPOTLESS! Rooms are bigger than you would think for NYC..
Each room has a theme of stars from the past, which makes it even more inviting!
Every morning starting at 7:30, they offer a continental breakfast which is surpasses for sure... Fresh Muffins, home made breads, bagels croissants, peanut butter, cream cheese, butter, assorted jellies, coffee, tea, juices, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit.. even a splash of an English breakfast.. with ham, cheeses, olives.. beautifully displayed.. they have a closed in patio that when you are sitting there, you forget you are in the city... but instead in an English garden...The staff is the bomb! friendly and so helpful... they will suggest restaurants, shopping places, comedy clubs, you ask them... you will get an answer...and when you return from a day out in the big apple, they all want to know what you did and how it went... they are genuine people which makes Chelsea pines a home away from home....
Oh yea, and be sure to look for Charlie the resident cat... he's the best....
Thank you Chelsea Pines for a great 15 day stay.... Cant wait to see you next month!!!
I was traveling alone, so security was a big factor for me.... I felt so safe and welcomed there. I felt like they took me under their wings!

Room Tip: all of the rooms are great! some a bit bigger than others...They are all quiet, cozy, and immaculat...

My wife and I stayed here in July while having 4 days in New York. The location is great – right near a subway stop. While the standard rooms are small, most are in New York and the price was reasonable and it was clean, and comfortable with air-conditioning which was good considering it was really hot in New York when we arrived. Included was a good spread of breakfast each day and coffee whenever we wanted (needed) it. Staff were nice and offered us places to go to eat and explore. We wouldn’t have a problem staying here again.

Room Tip: Try and go close to ground as there aren't any lifts!
