We stayed at Chelsea Pines for the second time over the Christmas holiday and enjoyed our seven days there. Jay (the owner) and staff are friendly and eager to help you have a pleasant stay with them and in New York City. I love that Jay sends out a personal email following your stay and can recount conversations you had and names of those in your party. He's either got an amazing memory or he takes notes! Either way, it's a nice touch and makes it feel like you've just been visiting good friends .
We arrived very early in the morning on a cold December day and just wanted to leave our bags. The bags were taken and we were urged to come in, get warm and have breakfast with them. To our surprise, our suite on the fifth floor was ready for us as we finished breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, we really appreciate that they offer a very nice choice of breakfast items including yogurt, cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, sweet rolls and warm beverages. With the cost of dining out in New York, this is a definite added value to the price of your room. On the last day of our stay our flight was delayed by several hours because of the Dec. 26 blizzard. Again, our hosts were very gracious and invited us to hang out at the hotel after checkout so that we could stay warm, and enjoy goodies from the snacks they serve all day instead of slogging off to wait at the airport.
As others have pointed out, the location is terrific. It's out of the hustle of midtown, but has easy access to the subway and has great places to eat and interesting things to do right in the neighborhood. We appreciate the daily newsletter that is slipped under your door in the morning. We learned about places to eat and things to see and do that we might otherwise have missed. The restaurants on Cornelia Street was the great newsletter find this time.
The rooms are clean and decor is quirky as others have mentioned. More space for luggage would be nice, but in the rooms we have stayed in, there were closets to stash to suitcases in and we used the dressers to hold our stuff. Part of the secret is to travel light! We appreciated the refrigerators that were in each of the rooms we occupied. We think the prices are reasonable for New York and especially so, if you can catch one of their specials.
I would like to suggest that a few more hooks or an extra towel rack be installed in the rooms where more than two people stay. If the hotel wants to encourage the environmentally friendly practice of using towels for more than one day, more towel hanging devices are needed.
A final note of thanks to Troy and other staff who were out shoveling snow on into the night and early in the morning so that guests could get in and out of the hotel during and after the blizzard. It was such a nice place to return to on those fabulous, cold, snowy days we were there. We would definitely come back.
