We stayed in Hotel 31 for 4 nights with my boyfriend at the end of our American road trip in May. Looking at the prices of hotels in New York I thought we were lucky to find this place for reasonable price at a very central location. Only couple of blocks away from Empire state building, about 15-20 min walk to Time square, good choice of restaurants in the area. OK the room was quite small, but nice and clean, didn't spend much time in it anyway why would you when visiting New York. Shared bathrooms were always clean, they must have been checked even during the night. If you have a car parking can be a bit of a hassle. We got explained by different members of staff few times how you can park on the street for free after certain time but really early in the morning you would have to move your car on the other side of the street to continue parking for free (or something along those lines). Luckily we only had our rental car for one more night so we just parked in a car park near by and paid. Over all a very pleasant stay, would definitely consider this hotel for our next trip to New York!

Cute and clean little Hotel in a great location. I was not sure what to expect from a 2 star Hotel in New York. I heard all sorts of horrible stories of other hotels. I was very pleased when i entered the hotel. It has a lovely New York atmosphere. It’s not a new, fancy hotel and some of the wall paper is dated... but who cares. The staff was very helpful when we needed information or an iron. I love the elevator. It does not have a spa or breakfast room... but it's in Manhattan and if you want to go out and explore the city it’s a good hotel. The mattress was a bit noisy so.
I have no problem to recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: There is a shuttle bus from Newark Airport to Manhattan which is 15 $. Unfortunately we took a taxi and got ripped off by the cap driver cost us 95$. Taxi supposed to cost $75 to this hotel.

Got a room for two, with one extra bed. There were 3 of us, receptionist appears to be less friendly than average New Yorker. We were jampacked but didn't really care since we only need a place to leave our things and sleep, and we still enjoyed staying there. Pretty close to Subway stations. Shared bathrooms, but didn't have to wait at all. Might be good value for a place like downtown Manhattan. Not recommended if travelling with kids.

It's the same basic concept as Hotel 17, except this one is in midtown. We were lucky-- the staff person at the front desk was very kind; gave us very simple (of course) but still comfortable room looking out at the Empire State Building. It felt like it was one of the better rooms, and he knew this. Quiet, definitely no frills, but for what it was it worked. It's a bare bones hotel, but it still makes the effort within those bare bones.

When all you need is clean room and a comfortable bed in between exploring the city, then you really can't go wrong with this small traditional hotel. Rooms are tiny and no-frills, bathrooms are shared and the old-fashioned lift is a bit hard to negotiate, but here you're a couple of blocks from the Empire State, Grand Central, Broadway & Times Square, with easy access to subway stations. Staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were really well-heated during one of the coldest winters New York has had, and there were lots of eating options close by. I would certainly stay here again and have recommended it to several friends as a good budget option in an expensive city.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues ask for a room on a lower floor.
