I'm a single woman who visited NYC in October, and stayed at Hotel 31 for 3 nights. My room was small, but clean, quaint, and comfortable. The shared bathrooms are very clean and neat. There was only one time that it was occupied and I had to go to another one down the hall. No hassle at all. GREAT location. "Iggy," the octogenarian bellman was an added attraction. :)

At first I was very hesitant about booking this hotel on line. We had spent a lot of time trying to find an affordable hotel downtown New York. This quaint little hotel had everything we needed. Rooms were small but cozy and clean! Shared bathroom was not a problem at all. We were there over a weekend and didn' t see another soul. The best part about this hotel was LOCATION...only 2 blocks from the Empire State building.

It's not the most luxurious place I've been to and in most cities it'd be much cheaper, but this is a good base to explore most of the main sites of New York. Staff were helpful whenever we asked them anything. The room was clean, although there were a few holes in the walls and several sorts of wallpaper from different eras in the one room. No bedbugs! Wonderful old creaky lift, if you like old creaky lifts (which we did). One warning: the rooms at the front of the hotel can be even noisier than normal in New York due to the Mid Town Tunnel nearby. But then no one comes here for the quiet.....my 6 year old daughter loved the place; there's a great pizza restaurant a couple of doors down on the same street and a good diner round the corner.

On our flight over we read about the New York bed bug infestation and having read an earlier review of the hotel we were concerned. However, delighted to report that it was a little gem of a place to stay. Found the hotel very easily. Great location close to Empire Stae and Grand Central Station. Macy's just a 10 minmute walk away. Times square a little further. Subway just 2 mimutes away. The hotel was adequate for our needs for a short stay. On arrival we were given a room that we had not booked (no private facilities) as we put the key in the lock reception rang to say that it was their error and we were moved immediately. The staff were very helpful in looking after our luggage on the last day, answering all queries, phoning for our airport transfers. The room was clean, the bathroom was a little small but had a bath and a shower. Plenty of hot water and toiletries provided. Towels changed daily and sheets changed during our 4 night stay. The room by USA standards was small but had 2 queen size beds. We had a coffee maker in the room and air con. There is no breakfast provided but we ate at Cosi every morning less than a 100 yards away from hotel. Coffes, teas, orange juice, porridge, bagels etc. We saw the shared bathrooms on the corridor and they always were clean and never seemed to be used. Give the hotel a try - it's simple, clean and well located.

For a budget hotel this place is great. Not too far from anywhere be it by walking or subway. On occasion it was a little noisy at night, general city noises like police sirens, but that's outside the hotels control.

I had a room with a private bathroom which was kept clean. The room had a safe, AC, coffee making facilities and TV, can't really ask for more at these prices. My room was a decent size and was at the back of the hotel.

Staff were pleasant but not overly helpful.
