This is a beautiful hotel that has a lot of class. You can arrive in tennis shoes and a ponytail and t-shirt and still be treated like royalty. The rooms and bathrooms are renovated and the staff is very cheerful and helpful. The location can't be beat. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: the free wifi was slow. Did not pay for the faster wifi. Our room faced the Cathedral and was very...

Finally early this year they finish the millionaire renovation .
More than two years of noise and dust. New bars, restaurant extremely nice.
But the service particulary in the rooms went down. There is no afternoon turndown of your room.
The hotel has a extremely good location.
The bellboys are the same, always very attentive.
I expected more regarding the hundreds of millions of dollars that they spend in the renovation.
Last..no good to come with the kids

Room Tip: Corners room quieter and bigger

Great location! Close to theater district, Central Park, 5th Avenue shopping - many of the tourist attractions. Easy to get around on foot to most places mentioned. Beautiful facilities, helpful staff. I miss the old lobby, before the remodel, as it had more places to sit & enjoy a glass of wine or hot chocolate for the kids. There's only a few scatters seats now. Doesn't look as "inviting" as before. There are lounges off the lobby but they appear less casual. Still enjoy the hotel, though. It's a beautiful place to stay.

Room Tip: I like the rooms facing St. Patrick's Cathedral. It is under renovations now-2015, but still be...

Renovated, spacious cathedral view room on high floor with fabulous view of NY skyline. Good functionality. Some staff very friendly and flexible : front desk, doormen, cleaning lady.

Lack of basic services such as morning newspaper delivery at door (have to go and pick-up yourself near lifts ... in pijama if you want to read early), evening turndown and reliable Wifi (weak signal despite two tel calls to IT, charge waived). Not worthy a five star hotel, rather more like a low cost hotel. The lobby lounge is dark and uninviting, the breakfast room is overly baroque. Some staff not friendly: concierge, waiter at breakfast. Room: missing reading light when in bed; sitting corner has no dedicated light, so is dark.

Last time I book this hotel I went with the thought of having a easy night with a good room and dinner at Gilt the hotel restaurant. After I checked in I found that the restaurant has closed. Now that the renovations were finished I thought I would try the same plan again. The hotel renewal featured a widely promoted Villard by Michel Richard restaurant. I had read a lot about the restaurant and wanted to try it. While checking in I asked if I could make a dinner reservation and was told the restaurant was closed for the summer. This having happen to me twice in a row I expressed my view of not being made aware of this at time of booking. They said I could eat at a very good restaurant next door and sign the cost to my room like it was there restaurant. A steak house dinner was not what I had in mind for that night. The complaint got me a room with a view that the hotel charges a premium for. The view was nice but I was expecting a voucher for some drinks or an upgrade to a suite or tower room.

If you go on the hotel web site under our hotel section they are promoting the restaurant and using the phase "inspired dinning" except there is no place to dine in the hotel. If you go further at first glance you think there all many dining options in the hotel. If you hit the Villard by Michel Richard it does pop up but you have to pay attention to hours of operation to find out it is only open for breakfast. If you go onto hotel booking sites all the ones I check feature the restaurant. Clearly the Hotel has no interest in getting the out that there are no dinners here.

I really loved this hotel in the past and some of the other hotels once owned by the Helmsleys but being fooled twice enough for me and neither time did the hotel do enough to make it right.

I chose this hotel for its location - near the office I work at and yet in a nicer part of town for me (bit less noisy than Central Park). At the end of the week my wife and kids joined me and we stayed for the weeekend.

Service - the doorman and bellmen were fantastic. They are super helpful, energetic and helped us out with a lot of questions etc. They seemed to love their jobs.

The service at the front desk was not good on check in or check out. Very odd, really the only bad service that we encountered the entire time. They seemed like they hated being there, did not want to help and just wanted people out of the way. Very odd. However, the rest of the staff was great and they seemed to go out of their to help.

The gym is great - more like a health club. If you travel for business and do the red-eye into NY (like I do) then you can go up to the gym, shower, shave and get suited & booted. Great washroom with superb amenities (more like a private club). This helped me a great deal. This alone is worth booking here if you need to tidy up early on. I noticed a few of us doing the same the day I arrived.

The restaurants were good but some just ok. The one on the 2nd floor was trying to hard (the staff was a bit gormless/stuck-up there come to think of it) and the food only so-so. We quickly started heading out for food as there are many great spots nearby. Just ask the doormen (they know a lot!)

I did like the bars and lounges though, good bartending (great martini's!) Having drinks on the patio at night was very nice way to end a busy day and cool off a bit from the summer heat.

The room had 2 smaller queen beds but they were super comfy, so it worked for us. Took us a minute to sort through the mound of decorative pillows to get in but worth it in the end. Note: they have 2 spare normal pillows in the closet.

Huge room for NY as well. Our room was on the 9th floor and it was redecorated recently to a very high standard. Great bathroom, good desk for work and lots of room for storing suits and shoes etc.

WIFI was an extra charge but was fast for us in our room. We had no view but that is good come sleepy time - super quiet room. Some of the best night's sleeps I have managed in NY.

I am going to stay here from now on when going to NY, it is that good. Just hope the check in staff improves.
