We previously owned a timeshare in the Hilton Club, located over at the main hotel a few blocks away, but took advantage of an offer to convert our ownership to West 57th instead. Since then I've stayed at West 57th a couple of times both as a solo traveler and with my husband. It's a nicer place to have a "home away from home" than the Hilton Club, primarily because West 57th is more modern and most of all QUIET. At the Hilton Club at the hotel, I had difficulties working or relaxing in my room during the day (which I need to do if I'm planning to go out at night) because other travelers and maids would be making so much noise in the halls. I have not had that problem at West 57th. It's a very restful atmosphere.
I love the great big tubs (only present in certain types of rooms, but when you can get one, it's awesome) and the beds are very comfy. Everything is very new and clean. The televisions are a little complicated to operate, but once you figure it out the channel selection is excellent. As other reviews have noted, some of the bathroom layouts are strange and at least in the Penthouses there is no door on the bathroom separating it from the bedroom, which can be a bit odd. The Penthouse bathroom also has water for the bathtub coming from a spigot in the ceiling, which is artistic but also weird and very noisy, and there is a TV ostensibly to watch in the bathtub but in contrast to the TV's in the other rooms it has almost no channel selection and in fact seems to not work much of the time. The rooms have fridges and in-room safes, which work well, and high-speed Internet, which is free but is very slow. Forget watching any sort of video on it and once it caused me to be late with a work project. Needs to be faster.
One big minus in my opinion, which wasn't made clear from the advertising literature, is that very, very few of the rooms in this property have a park view. Even the Penthouses do not have one from the rooms, although you can leave your room and go out on a separate little balcony reserved only for Penthouse-dwellers to commune with the park. There isn't even a view from the Owners' Lounge (which is actually at ground floor level) or other public area. I don't mind the street/ office building view, but the park view is really breathtaking and it seems a waste not to face more of the rooms out on it. It would be nice if down the road, Hilton was able to maybe add some type of owners' lounge on an upper floor where everybody could enjoy the park view, preferably from indoors for when the weather is hot, cold or rainy.
The owners' reception each evening features some great hot and cold hors d'oeuvre selections and drinks. Breakfast is also pretty good but would be better if they offered something besides bread products - you can't get any eggs or sausage, or any hot breakfast items at all other than oatmeal, even if you pay for them, and when I'm staying a few days the lack of my usual breakfast starts to disagree with me. The owners' lounge is also far too small to accommodate everyone, unless the intent was to make sure people don't spend too much time in the lounge. The actual lobby of the hotel is very small and only has a few seats, and gets congested at times, so it's not a comfortable place and I try not to spend any time there.
Location is a big plus as it's just a few steps to Carnegie Hall and the Russian Tea Room, the park is very close by, the subway is very conveniently located and of course there are cabs. The area gets a little bit dead after dark, but on the plus side it is pretty safe and quiet to walk down the block in this neighborhood at night as I often do when I've come back from somewhere on the subway.
West 57th has no restaurant or kitchen of its own, but they do give you a list of places from which you can order and they work with one restaurant to deliver food to your room between certain hours (like room service), which I ordered once and found quite good. There are also a number of delis and takeout places right near the hotel although some of them are closed at night. I like Fresh Bites, a make-your-own-salad place located across the street. There's also a large drugstore next door to the hotel, and a spa affiliated with the hotel (which I can't comment upon since I don't care for spas and thus don't use it).
The staff seemed a little inexperienced the first time I stayed here but on subsequent visits they have improved, particularly in terms of responsiveness. Then again I may not be the best person to comment since I visit NYC a lot and tend to make my own reservations and get tips from my friends rather than asking the staff for help.
Overall despite the issues with the view and the small owners' lounge, this is a pretty nice and restful place to stay in the city, and I don't regret converting over from The Hilton Club.
