Owner description: Still offering the steam and sweat since 1892, these health spas are alive and well in New York where people get stretched, steamed and pounded as they relax and renew themselves.

First of all, I take umbrage at the class-ist reviewer who declared that no "1 percenters" would like this place or want to go. I, a proud and unrepentant 1 percenter, have been going here for something like 25 years, and this place is great. Those reviewers who dislike the place should have figured out what they were getting into b4 they went--this is not for those seeking a pristine, sterilized environment or friendly staff. This is old school schvitzing here. It is indeed, as One reviewer said, like walking into a Russian mafia movie. Forget the bad reviews and go and enjoy.

Dirty , hot, sweating all over the place . Upselling all the time . I went in asking for only the salt scrub and the platza ( beating with oak leaves ) not sure how I ended up being applied a mud mask on my body and then a shampooing and then the scrub...... Hmmm 99.00... Oh well, I went with it. But never again ....plus the therapist pushed for a tip .... Not good. Anyways if u go ... 100% get the platza ....whoa was that amazing ... I felt like a new woman afterwards ! Never knew being hit with oak leaves could feel so exhilarating ! This place is beyond dirty ....but it's a bathhouse .... A 100% authentic Russian bathhouse ! Will be returning when I come back to the city ....I went on Boris shift .... Not sure how David shift is .... But a little birdie told me the drama that the 2 owners don't even get along ! Drama in a bathhouse ! Who would of thought it .

Since 1892... has not been cleaned or maintained properly... The Russian sauna is interesting and super hot though. If you want an interesting and unusual experience - try it. If you are disgusted with uncleanliness and tattooed naked men- don't .

There was a review earlier suggesting one "try it for yourself," and that hits the nail on the head. It's someplace that is worth a visit, unlike anything I've ever seen! No naked people, not a pick-up spot, no vice activity going, just a co-ed steam, heat and cold water pool. It's run by stoic Russian folks, and yes, it's beat up and old, but that's part of the experience. Should one not wish to return, that would be understandable, it's not for everyone. But don't be frightened by negative reviews.

Looking for a five-star spa experience? Not here. Wanna go to a throwback bath house, climb narrow steep staircases, get some steam, a heated room, and a 45-degree cold water plunge? This is the place! Try it and decide. I'll go back on my next East Coast jaunt!

I like to relax here and go into the saunas. I do feel the "scrubs' are a bit of a rip off. I wanted a massage but the attendant told me that a one hour massage is 90$ but the works ( salt, mud and soap scrub included a massage) and was only $99. Well there were indeed scrubs but the massage only last maybe 10 minutes if that? And after, while still drowsy from the experience, the guy made commit to giving him a tip.

Okay that being said. For history (since 1892 no less) , for the experience, for people wacthing (the mix is so amazing) for relaxing in the saunas which are a not luxurious.. it's great. Also
get an 8 dollar russian entre after the massage. The pork stew with Kasha was great.

Just say no to the scrubs. Great tip and what I will do next time. Go across the street to the Chinese place and get an hour massage there for about 50 bucks. Then plot down 35 and just use the sauna.
