My teen loved just window shopping up and down Madison Avenue. We decided to go in to Tiffany's (since it's such an icon) and the staff were super nice and friendly. Cartier building still under renovation, but decorated beautifully at Christmas-time. Rockefeller Plaza is just off Madison so that's always a fun end to our stroll.

Great shopping, art galleries and more. Wear your walking shoes and walk, don't take a cab (unless you ready to go back to your hotel). Walk and enjoy the nice stores without the big crowds on 5th Avenue.

People rave about New York. Those who have never been longingly yearn to go. I never understood why until walking along Madison Avenue, away from the maddening crowds of nearby 5th Avenue and stopping for tea at the Carlyle. Shops range from art dealers, all the major European fashion houses to wonderfully unique old-fashioned pharmacies. It's a gem. Beautiful area, some stunning buildings and a traditional, elegant feel.

Madison Avenue in the upper east side is a welcome respite from the crowds of 5th Avenue. Barney's and lots and lots of high end retailers, art galleries, and crowded and pricey restaurants line both sides of the street. Well dressed shoppers and store keepers alike. Very chic. Very comfortable area to get away from the masses. And just a block east of Central Park.
