I read about the hotel in Natl. Geographic Traveler magazine and I was not disappointed. It is a small hotel, with a great location and a friendly and helpful staff. It is a reasonably quiet neighborhood with good transit access and nice food choices nearby. The room was clean and comfortable. Will stay here again when I return to New York.

I recently speant 5 days at The Mave with my teenage daughter. We had booked a full, knowing by the reviews to expect a small room. But you don't go to NYC to sleep!!
Even though it was small and the only place to sit was the bed, there was plenty of drawer space to empty our suitcases.
The staff were always very friendly and helpful and if they couldn't answer my question, they went in search of the answer.
The location is great. A 10 mintue walk from Penn Station, 10 mintues to the Empire State Building. A subway stop 2 blocks away. And the best of all, right around the corner from Madison Square Park which houses the Shake Shack and Eatily.
Great places to grab lunch, dinner or a late night snack.
The complimentary breakfast is as described, pastries tea and coffee. All could do with improvement but if you want a hot breakfast you can go across the street to Essen and choose from multiple flavours of coffee, oatmeal, eggs, etc.
Only 2 negatives I could find about the hotel. 1. the shower is a step in with a half glass wall. The water everytime would leak out of the shower until the bathroom floor and there was only one small towel rack on the glass wall right beside the toilet. Okay for 1 person, but not 2.
Also, There was quite a bit of dust down behind the headboard and beside the bed against the wall. However, I asked the front desk to have it cleaned and it was done so when we returned later that day.
This was my 3rd trip to New York and I will be back and will visit The Mave again.

Thank you so much for choosing the MAve. We realize you have countless hotel options in NYC and we are glad to have been your hotel of choice. We would love the opportunity to provide a complimentary upgrade to a larger room during your next stay - it sounds like you would have appreciated a little more space. Thanks for your comments regarding the headboard. While it was surprising to hear, we will certainly share with our Housekeeping team. We hope to see you both again...

Jason

Found a midweek deal on Groupon for about $200/night (including tax). Very nice people working there, especially Nick, who had helped us get to different places via Subway and even checked for reservations at a local restaurant for us. Very nice of him! The room was fairly small but as I was told, that was expected in the city. It really wasn't a negative since we only needed a place to sleep. The room was clean and had an Ikea feel to it. Only negative in the room was that the bathroom door scraped along the floor which made it a bit difficult to open and close without giving it a little lift. As we checked out, they held our baggage for us for a short while as we went to the park and got a hot dog. They even allowed late check in. The hallways were a bit small n tight between rooms so I assumed the hotel were apartments before. All in all, great place to stay and good price for the city. Oh yeah, very close to Subway exit (one or two blocks away) which is ideal if you have luggage.

Room Tip: Corner room was awesome with a little bit of a view from each window (near bed and bathroom).

We just enjoyed a lovely stay at the MAve, our first visit to this hotel. We visit NYC frequently, and took advantage of a Groupon for this visit. The hotel did not disappoint, and we plan on returning.

The staff was outstanding from check-in to check-out. We booked a queen room, and it was smaller than most rooms we've stayed in while visiting the city (that's one of the reasons I gave the review four stars instead of five); but it was clean, comfortable, in a fantastic location, with courteous and extremely helpful staff.

Some of the things we liked most about the hotel:

1. Free wi-fi
2. Lots of TV channels (seemed like a lot more than most hotels)
3. Very easy to control air temperature in the room (we stayed during a heat wave, with temperatures approaching 100-degrees, and the room stayed pleasantly cool and comfortable throughout our stay).
4. Updated, clean bathroom, with full range of toiletries (some hotels don't include shower gel, vanity kits, shoe mitts, and shower caps, but this one does... in addition to the usual shampoo, conditioner and lotion)
5. Great location out of the hub of Times Square, but close enough to plenty of restaurants, shops, Madison Square Park, etc.
6. Terry cloth bathrobe for guest use

There were a few things I would have liked:

1. More towels in the bathroom (they only gave us two bath towels, one hand towel, two washcloths, and a bath mat); and the towel quality could have been better (the towels were thin and not as absorbent as others I've had in NYC hotels). Two bathrobes would also be nice in rooms occupying two guests (we only had one).

2. Two chairs in the room, so one of us wouldn't have to sit on the bed if we wanted to watch TV or just sit down and relax during the day (I personally don't like to sit or lie on the bed in street clothes). The hotel staff did bring up a folding chair for us to keep in the room during our stay, and that was very nice.

3. More hooks in the hotel room or bathroom for hanging wet towels, laundry bag, robe, or clothing

I would definitely give the staff at this hotel five stars. They were friendly and accommodating, and went out of their way to make us comfortable and happy.

I highly recommend this property if you're going to visit Manhattan and don't mind a small room (I believe there is a king room that is larger than the one we reserved). My main concerns when selecting a hotel room are cleanliness and location, and this hotel was up to my standards on both points.

My daughter and I recently had the opportunity to stay at the Mave Hotel once again. This time our planned short stay to relocate her to the city ended with us occupying the Mave Hotel for almost a month until an apartment was found. From the moment you enter the door and are greeted by the most wonderful front doorman and front desk men and women you are entering paradise in the city. The hotel is beautiful, classy, clean, and after living there for close to a month I can truly say we wanted for nothing. The cleaning staff were perfect and when we needed to stay longer, reservations helped us so that we could stay in our same accomodations instead of relocating to another room, we were introduced to the human resource woman who was in the lobby upon our departure; everyone was so wonderful that I can trully say that when we left we missed everyone! We look forward to our next visit and I hope that the people we became friends with are still employed by this wonderful hotel when we return. By the way, the location is perfect too! Thanks Mave Crew for turning our nightmare situation into a wonderful and refreshing stay! Ann and Katherine Owen (Room 305)

Room Tip: We stayed in the king bed room and it was perfect !

We just took advantage of the Independence Day Special and stayed on July 4th. We've stayed at the MAve before and it's generally our first choice when in NY. The hotel is extremely clean, beds are very comfy, the staff is welcoming and the location can't be beat. It's all that it needs to be, and more.

We recently stayed one night at this location with a groupon deal. The rooms were super small and not amazing, although I guess it was what was to be expected given the location vs. the price. The bathrooms were very nice. The staff was very helpful. The complimentary breakfast was really just pastries and coffee. We would have appreciated some fresh fruit or something more nutritious. Also, do not miss the bar next door-- Shorty's. They brew their own beer and it's pretty good!
