My wife and I booked 4 nights at this hotel, and it was ideal for our short break to New York. OK, it’s not the Waldorf Astoria, but for the money we paid it was great PLUS you also got breakfast.
From the outside the hotel does not look much, but it’s a 5 minute walk to Times Square and there are theatres and bars / cafes all on the doorstep. It is located on West 44th Street, Just off 9th Avenue (towards 8th Avenue).
Checking in was quick and easy. The staff on reception, to the cleaners, all were very polite and helpful.
The hotel has 7 floors and we were on the 5th. There is one small lift and it’s a bit slow but you can always take the stairs. The room had 2 double beds, flat screen TV, filter coffee machine, air conditioning/heating unit, fridge, iron, ironing board, en-suite bathroom, with small bath and shower.
The room was a little small, and my only gripe really was that there was not enough drawer space. Perhaps the hotel should consider taking out a couple of the chairs and adding in a chest of drawers, or maybe instead of having 2 double beds, have one queen/king sized bed as this would just give a bit more space. The room was fine for a couple, but for more than 2 people I think that it would be a bit of a squeeze.
We had room 507, which was at the back of the hotel and quite quiet. The only noise was occasionally from the fridge. There was also a bit of a draught coming from behind the AC unit. The beds were very comfy and we got a good night’s sleep (or maybe that was due to all the walking that we did!).
Breakfast was coffee, tea, bread, bagels, muffins, pastries, cereal, waffles, fruit – plenty to set you up for the morning.
When we arrived at JFK airport, the cost of the yellow cab, was $58 to the hotel (set fare to central Manhattan hotels). We arrived on Sunday lunchtime, and the transfer to the hotel took about 45minutes. On our return, we asked the hotel to book a cab for us, and they use a private taxi firm, with a flat fare of $65. Note: if you want to use the tunnel you will have to add on the tolls of $7.50 to this. The private taxi was nice, a big 4x4 with blacked out windows – cool! This arrived on time and took about 60 minutes to get through the Thursday evening rush hour traffic to the airport.
All on all, we had a nice break and the Comfort Inn Times Square West was more than adequate for our city break and I’d recommend this for couples or 2 people who are looking for a central, good value for money hotel.
P.S. The Beer Authority bar a couple of doors up from the hotel was great. It’s like a sports bar, but they have happy hours and do some nice cocktails and also a good selection of beers and ales.
