Travelled with my husband, daughter and her partner for a four night stay at Distrikt Hotel and what a great stay it was. We had a late arrival due to a delayed flight from Las Vegas and found the staff on reception and the porter very pleasant, polite and helpfull. The room was smaller than our hotel in Vegas but by New York standards it was a decent size and ample big enough for our needs. The hotel has just 5 rooms per floor so no chance of getting lost and we had queen beds on floors 29 and 30.From our window we had a view of the Hudson river to our right and the Empire State Building to our left, but I had no intention of looking to the view below. The room and shower room were beautifully presented and comfortable and serviced each day if required. We did use the free wifi and were able to check-in on line and print off boarding passess free of charge which meant less time queueing at the airport.
The hotel has a subway station at the end of the street, is in the next street to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and is just two blocks from Times Square so convenient for mid town it certainly was. My daughter and her partner opted for the Greyline Hop on Hop Off Bus for two days which they were able to access at the end of the street and found to be extremely useful. We on the other hand opted for shanks's pony and the subway having done the Hop on/off buses on previous trips.
We did the Top of The Rock , not opened on previous visits, and loved space on the observation decks and the view...only the rain spoilt it. We bought a sunrise/sunset ticket which allowed two visits any-time over two consecutive days, but abandoned our second sunset visit due to such low cloud that we couldn't see the upper portion of the Rock!!
Using the subway was so quick and easy, we just had the odd problem with taking the wrong exit from the larger stations but soon found our way again.
The view of Manhatten from the Brooklyn Promenade is brilliant and we chose the one sunny day we had to venture to Brooklyn on the subway and then walked back to Times Square. The walk along the promenade is great and we could see from the Statue of Liberty up the East River and well past the Chrysler Building.
We also took the subway to Coney Island and walked along the promonade to Brighton Beach where we caught the subway back to Brooklyn. A quick and easy trip which was made even better by the beautiful spring weather and showed what great beaches there are within 30 mins of Manhatten.
Although 3 of us had been to Liberty and Ellis Island on a previous trip our one 'regret' was leaving the Statue of Liberty until our last day and finding at 10:30 extremely long queues for tickets and even longer ones for security. We decided not to spend half a day queueing so opted to take the Statten Island Ferry to get a closer view of 'Miss Liberty' . I have since been told that there are security checks at the base of the staue too so I would suggets that anyone wanting to make the trip does so as early in the morning as possible and purchase your admission tickets before you go.
The one negative we had with this trip to New York was the general cost of eating out compared with other American cities and compared to our last visit. It would not stop us returning to the Big Apple though.
