Was staying at a hotel nearby and saw it mentioned on the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives website--was not disappointed--great sandwich, friendly people behind the counter--if you want a good, old-style Italian hero, this is your place.

After a humid stroll around Red Hook we headed to DeFonte's for their acclaimed sandwiches and were not disappointed by either the sandwiches themselves or the theater of their production and purchase. We had a hot pastrami and a roast beef sandwich, 20 bucks - can't beat it!

This was our second stop in our food tour of NYC. When we found the place in was a small store packed with people in line. A good sign! We met several NYC Firefighters who were also ordering food. Another good sign because they love to eat. Good sandwiches!! All of the sandwiches’ have a great nick names when they are on special. We ordered the “Dino” a meatball hoagie and the pork hero. Meatballs were hot and flavorful covered with fresh mozzarella. The sauce was good. The Nicky special was also pretty good. I ordered mine with broccoli rabe. The rabe was cold... I like mine hot. There are a few seats outside if the crazies aren't already sitting in them. Another must stop in NYC!!

The fresh seeded Italian bread was excellent and our sandwiches piled high with meats, cheeses, lettuce, tomato, and their special hot salad (a perfect ratio of bread to fillings). I had the Little Nicky and my wife had the Italian tuna. The seating is limited but what a joy to see people come in and observe their sandwiches being constructed. It seemed many were regulars and the staff was very friendly and proud of their work. The space is tight and people were asked to move down toward the register after they ordered. There are a few tables and chairs outside...we sat inside because of hot day. Even though we were visitors, it was nice to get away from the crowds in the more tourist centered areas. Each hero was about $11 but was of great value considering the quality of the food served. Cold beverages were in a cooler near the cash register. A perfect lunch spot.

Defonte's is a local gem in Red Hook and makes all kinds of great hot and cold sandwiches. I had a hot eggplant parmesan sandwich with red peppers. It was made on a deliciously fresh hero bread. I downed it with a cold soda and it was so tasty I licked my fingers. This is mostly a take out place but there are a few stand up tables. They also offer various sides like fries, potato salad, cole slaw and so on. The service is very fast, friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable and the quality of the food is consistently high. .
