Chic&Budget New York

Okay, I was bit worried about all those uniform reviews, all saying just "place is great, Bert is nice" in unison.. its almost suspicious, isnt it? Dont worry! It is simply true.. :)

We stayed in the 131st apt. Apartment is very spacious and nicely decorated. All necessary accessories (iron, hair dryer, microwave, fridge etc etc) are in place and work properly. Sleeping room was quiet enough (relatively.. you are in a very busy part of the city!) - windows are not facing the street, but a yard with trees.

There are really minor issues here and there, but no real problem - the place is a bit worn and old, There are some stains from previous leaking on the ceiling etc, you really shouldnt inspect the place too thoroughly, say, under beds etc :).. it is definitely not dirty, but dont expect a superb hotel level cleanliness - go to a hotel if you want one.

Our toilet clogged once but we solved that ourselves easily using that huge plunger in the bathroom. The water pressure in the shower wasnt perfect. Walking on the wooden floors really makes much noise (we didnt mind of course, being on the top floor - but once, somebody complained, respectively banged on our floor from below - even though we really tried not to make unecessary noise). I can imagine this could be very unpleasant.

However, all of the issues mentioned above just come with the age of the building and its really impossible to blame the keepers..

As for the safety - building is locked all the time and has lockable iron bars in front of the front door. We felt completely safe. The neighborhood is actually very nice and seem to be on of the better ones in New York. Everybody was friendly to us. The American Legion, jazz bar Bert recommended to us, was wonderful.

Forget all the crap about Harlem - there are no gangstas, no brothels or pawn shops etc, the most frequent facility around is probably a church :) You see old people, families with children.. I think, once, we met a beggar and once, some girls who might have been "ladies of the night" (or not)..but thats it. It is a normal, real neighborhood, not a showcase for tourists. There are plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, even a fresh fish market..

Central park is in walking distance and from 125th street station, there are two express trains and two local trains going to lower Manhattan. With the xpress train it really takes just a while to get there.

Overall, we were very pleased. Dont be to picky and you will love this place, its value is so much better than of a matchbox-sized hotel room! We felt like we actually live in NYC, which is priceless.

Room Tip: I would definitely go for top floor apartment..

Stayed in Garden apartment on 131st street for over a week at end of Sept 2011. Room was clean, bed very comfy, bathroom clean, good TV, kitchen well equipped, quiet nights overall.

Mildly annoying points; could hear footsteps from people above pretty clearly - but only a problem if they come 'home' after you've gone to bed, internal doors don't seem to shut i.e bathroom door and the communal door to go downstairs which must annoy people in room next to it as a good shove is needed to open it. Wireless wasn't great in the room - kept cutting out and gave up trying to use it. Were given fresh towels when requested.
Area was ok and nothing happened to make me say it is not safe - though we didn't really stay out beyond midnight. My wife didn't fancy going out alone. A few nights there would be a small group of teenagers sitting on steps which seemed intimidating, but they moved without asking when they realised you were going in that building.
Only 5 min walk from A,C line subway at 125th street. you can enter on 127th street.

For the price you pay I don't see any reason why you wouldn't stay here.

closing point - found it weird that the building had no mention of chic&budget on the outside and a for sale sign up...

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience. The wooden floors in these houses are one of the features that guests love. However, some footsteps can be heard on the floor immediately beneath. Wi-fi is not available at this location and this has been indicated in our list of amenities. There are public networks which guests are able to connect to. During the nice weather it's not uncommon to see locals mingling on the stoops. As stated in the review these neighbors moved when they realised the guests were entering the building. Guests often speak of the friendly nature of Harlemites, from offering directions to the popular American Legion jazz club to saying hello or good morning. Any indications or lack there of on the exterior of this property are beyond our control.

Very impressed with this place, travelled with a couple of mates and Bert made us all feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend an apartment here to people looking to explore New York from a reasonably priced base.

Last Summer was actually the second time we chose Chich&Budget for our accomodation in New York and we would never choose anything else. Not only is the apartment (127 garden loft this time around) absolutely stunning, but Bert is such a nice guy, he'll help you and give you the best advice for your stay in NY.

Everything was comfortable, cozy and perfect. Not one problem. The apartment is only 10 minutes away from the subway station and if you take the express line from there, you'll get downtown in no time at all.

What we as a family love about Harlem is how comfortable and at home we feel there, and the apartment experience is a million times better than a hotel! You will not regret this very affordable choice.

We stayed the three of us (a couple with a 2 year old daughter) at Chic&Budget for 6 days this summer. The place was amazingly peaceful, just what you need after a day of visiting in Manhattan. We stayed in the only room with an en-suite bathroom, which was perfect for us. The whole place is very clean, cosy, and the warm welcome by Bert made us feel from the start that we chose the right place for our holidays. With the subway, or even the bus, there's easy access to any place in Manhattan. In Harlem, there are a few places really great to eat (Sylvia, the Red Rooster). On 125th street, just a few minutes from the Chic&Budget, there's a small supermarket with great food (organic,...) and there's a really nice vegetarian take away.

As a final note, I would like to thank Bert, not only for his amazing hosting, but also for his great help when we had to look for another place to stay at (as I initially forgot to book one night). Bert really went out of his way to find us a place. Thanks also to Sophie at the www.lamaisondartny.com. I hope next time I'll bring my game of Warri to challenge Bert.

The appartment was very clean and well equiped. Bert is very helpful and can give advise about NY. The appartment was 10min walking from the subway station and it took us 20min from the station to get to lower Manhattan. It was a pleasure to come back there after the whole day visiting. A place I would recommend.

There were two of us booked into this hostel. Upon arrival by train to Penn station we gave a call to a very friendly guy Bert, who gave us info on how to get there.Bert takes care of the hostel operation. He made us familiar with NYC transportation possibilities and places worth visiting and showed us to our room/bathroom/shared kitchen. All areas perfectly clean. Equipment is great, we felt really great and comfortable there all week long. There is nothing to worry about much around the place, locals do respect your privacy and we even exchanged some stories with the guys from the opposite St.Nicholas community blocks. Shame we did not have time to explore Harlem deeper as the place has got a spirit, definitely! So,......go for it I´d bet you´ll get treated the same way we did.
