Consistent excellence!

This is my second review for The James Hotel in So Ho. My Wife and I frequently stay at the James and when we leave we are already planning the next stay. Consistent excellence at its best and the team members at The James never let us down from the executive office to the floor staff - the James has one heck of a team. From the moment you pull up to the front door and see the ever smiling Eric with his amazing upbeat attitude and impeccable service, you just know you are in a great place. Louis and Morgan are always there to head you in the right direction with so many great restaurants in So Ho and then up to the front desk where Amy and the team welcome you so graciously time and time again.
And what is a great hotel without a great Restaurant? The David Burke Kitchen fits the bill with Mike and Jamie leading the way and what is the David Burke’s Kitchen without David Burke? David himself was there and chatted with my Wife - she was so thrilled!
Want to see Consistent Excellence at its best? At the James’s it is an everyday occurrence!

My husband and I booked in for just shy of two weeks for our first trip to New York. We loved New York and our experience was made all the more special with our stay at The James.

The staff couldn't do enough to help us with all our special requests and queries. Thank you to Louis, Kenny, Morgan and the house keeping and in room breakfast dining crew.

Our room was awesome. We can highly recommend the corner king rooms. There was enough space to comfortably live for our lengthy stay.

The location we found perfect for us. We were just minutes walking distance from the Subway, great little restaurants and boutique shopping of Soho. Best of all was that we were so centrally located to Nolita, Greenwich and West Village which was the New York we wanted to experience.

A short subway ride and we could be amidst the touristy hotspots of Mid Town and Lower Manhattan.

A lovely touch is the wine and cheese in the foyer area in the afternoon. Definitely a nice way to retreat and reflect on the days activity.

The service was amazing – staff were attentive and very knowledgeable about restaurants and shops in the SOHO area. Location was perfectly central – a few blocks to all the best shopping in Broadway. The rooms are beautifully designed and included many little luxuries – pillows from heaven, high-quality hair and skin products, Starbucks instant coffee, comfy robes and slippers. Went to David Burke's Kitchen the first afternoon and the food exceeded expectations. Also recommend walking 1 block over to Aurora an upscale, authentic italian restaurant.

My partner and I booked a room at the James for a combined business/pleasure trip. We should have known something would be off at check-in. When we got to our room there was a gift for another guest. Upon returning it to the front desk we learned that we had been given a lower grade room than what we reserved. We were given keys to our new room and more service problems persisted the rest of our stay. Safe did not work and could not be fixed, not enough glasses, etc in the room. Overall poor service. The rooftop is nice, but too small, too "I'm trying to be hip", replete with drunk fighting couples who take their arguments to the room above you, and frankly overly loud if you are trying to sleep at night on the 15th floor. The James is trying to live up to its competition in Soho but has a very long way to go.

After dinner, we headed up to the rooftop bar and had a good margarita (albeit small) - it had better be good for $17 pricetag per drink! Dark-skinned man who served us was not friendly and quite brusque. I presume they are not relying on repeat business??!!

The views are just spectacular. I would definitely highly recommend this place for the perfect way to top off an evening! Rooms are just OK.

We stayed at The James because it was recommended by friends and it had received positive reviews. We purchased a package through Luxury Link. Overall, the hotel did not meet our expectations. While it was conveniently located on the edge of SoHo and the staff were generally friendly and helpful, this is a hotel that is trying to dress itself up as 'boutique luxury' and does not manage to pull it off. In my experience, other hotels in NYC at the same price point (or less) are far superior. While we appreciate that NYC hotel rooms are generally not spacious, the "deluxe guestroom" was tiny. The "complimentary bottle of wine" we received as part of our package was undrinkable. The glasses of wine we ordered through in-room dining were 'off', and when we called to let in-room dining know, they brought us two new glasses which were just as bad. Although the hotel's rooftop bar has a great view, its existence seems to permeate the hotel with the result that the elevators continually smell like booze and rather than feeling fresh, the hotel continually feels like it is recovering from last night's hangover. Our next stay in New York will not be at The James.

Outstanding hotel in every sense. Staying for a week while my daughter is at Joffrey and they are truly making us feel like VIP's. The service is top notch and the staff truly goes out of their way to make sure that you are taken care of. We are hotel snobs and I am so glad that I chose The James. Perfect location away from from the craziness but close enough to be convenient. Terrific concierge and bell services! Rick (with their car service) has been exceptional in making sure we are to Joffrey every morning and picked up each night. He has made a world of difference not having to clamor for a taxi in rush hour. Facilities at the hotel are superb, housekeeping is spot on and even the in-room dining has exceeded our expectations. Skip the big name hotels and head to The James. You wont be disappointed!

Room Tip: Go for the corner suites, the views are amazing!
