“Great option for reasonably priced accommodation close to NYC”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

When we visited NYC this time we didn't want to spend $300 plus a night. Everything sub $200 in downtown Manhattan had horror story like reviews and were in the 2 star or below category.

Found aloft on TA and it was a winner. Rooms were of 4 star standard. Huge amounts of room to lay out luggage etc. Nice large television with a great choice of pay TV channels. Bar fridge (empty) was handy for chilling drinks. Staff were quite helpful too. As others have mentioned subway is near by and express train gets you downtown within 15 or so mins. Area is fine during the day during the night you just keep to yourself and head straight to the hotel. Laundromat a few blocks south down on Frederick Douglas. Grocery store in the same vicinity with huge food range. Drug stores nearby etc. Harlem Tavern good food option nearby

Put it this way. If someone said they'd give you $150 for riding the train to and from Harlem everyday you'd do it. That's what you are going to have to pay extra for the same quality hotel downtown. House decide. Classic American saying.......Its a noooooooo brainer!!

We've never felt so welcome as we did at The Aloft! The front desk staff was AMAZING. Every time we entered the lobby, either coming or going they greeted and smiled at us. Everything else was great too. The pillows a little flat, but room was clean and the fridge was a nice bonus.

Would stay here again and again. Area is a bit sketchy - but we had no problems getting to and from the subway.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor, less noise.

The Aloft in Harlem is a fabulous hotel. The room is pretty spacious, nice LCD TV and the bathroom was incredible. And the fact that its right off of 125th Street and across the street from the World Famous Apollo Theater with plenty of sites was a plus. There was a mix up between the manager of the hotel with a video production company that came there to video tape me but overall this is a great place to stay. And no bed bugs! Yayyy!

Room Tip: All of the rooms seem to be the same but if the suite is available and you can afford it, go with th...

Amazing hotel, I liked the fact that the rooms were quite clean. Previously I read reviews about this place stating how it is "the only place to stay in Harlem" and I completely agree. Would definitely stay again!

The only place to stay in Harlem, this newly built trendy hotel is somewhere between cool and casual, a haven and safe house in old Harlem. The rooms are only meant to be 3 star, and they are fine. There's no such thing here as a view as Harlem is low rise grunge. However the Aloft ticks many boxes and it's affordable. Two major problems:

The breakfast is a DIY cereal in a polystyrene tub, add milk, stir and eat. Or a sandwich with a use-by date. Auto machine coffee, overly sweetened juice, biscuits in cellophane, piece of fruit from the bowl. Not good. And a very lazy delivery guys! Try harder.

Also as annoying is the reception area and lounge area. It seems to be the meeting place for staff. Guests wait around for an opportunity to speak to a staff member who is usually engaged in long winded chatter with fellow staff. It is not unusual to see 5-8 staff grouped together, chat, chat, chat. This was common, throughout our stay. Staff need to slip in and out of work without gathering in the guest areas and lazying away hours talking. Madness!

Otherwise, the place to sleep when in Harlem.

Room Tip: Don't ask for a view, there is none. Room sizes are fine.

On March 25th my co-worker and I stayed at Aloft. I valet the car for the night. When I returned to home, my friend noticed that the car had a really bad waxing job done to it, as there was wax in every crevice and joint of the car. This was peculiar, because it is a pretty expensive car and I have it waxed at a good place. That's when we took a closer look, and saw that the car had been crashed while I stayed at the hotel, and they waxed the car to cover it up. The side of the car from the rear passenger door to the rear bumped got scraped up by a wall or similar. After I checked out of the hotel and waited 45 minutes for the valet to bring my car out (on a quiet morning) I should have suspected something was wrong and taken a closer look. Anyway, I have been following up with the hotel ever since. The hotel manager, Daniel, has NEVER returned any of my calls. I spoke several times with shift managers, and while they are sympathetic, they were NEVER able to get a response from the parking garage, and now it has been a month with nothing done about the damage.

This is really a gem of a hotel, but you have to be willing to be close to a pretty sketchy part of New York. Not sure if I would stay here again or not. I was by myself and drove through what looked to be a pretty bad part of Harlem. The block this hotel is on isn't too bad, but close by it isn't all that great. Guess it depends on what you are looking for and how comfortable you are in Harlem. Everyone has their own comfort level for an area like this.

Other than the area, the room is really great-modern and trendy. Bed is comfortable. Pillows were a little flat. Hotel looks new. I valet parked my car and the hotel was very accommodating when I asked to leave it longer than normal time.

Staff was friendly and community areas are nicely done.

There was some type of noise outside my window all night-like a pinging noise. Annoying. But very little traffic noise for New York City.
