“A New York Oddity”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

We found ourselves in Burp Castle quite by accident. In exploring for a bar we were intrigued by the name. We appreciate good beer. So we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and breadth of selection. This is a great place for a quite drink (with a good book). We were speaking above a hushed voice and were very surprised to be shhhhhed by the very knowledgeable bartender.

“Great name, great beer, great eccentricity”
Reviewed 25 October 2010

I doubt there are many bars like this in Manhattan - it's not faux-old, it's not a neighbourhood bar, it doesn't do food and it wouldn't win any awards.
Except for beer.
A superb and eclectic collection of US and foreign beers on tap.
And that's it.
No fancy-dan promotions, no TVs with sport on mute and the only music played are Gregorian chants.
Yup, Gregorian chants ( it goes with the murals on the wall and the connection between monks and brewing )
Service-wise the barman on duty was definitely at the insouciant end of the scale between polite and rude but he knew his stuff about beer and was happy to chat about it all night.
Despite all this - and probably because of it - Burp Castle is a wonderful way to spend a few hours drinking really unusual and good beer.
But it's like Marmite.
You'll either love it or hate it.

“great spot for belgian beer”
Reviewed 4 October 2010

i came into burp castle on a friday night late in september and had a great time. i had been to a couple bars which had been pretty crowded with crappy beers on tap. this place was great. it's a smaller bar with dark woodwork. most of the tables had people at them, but there was always somewhere to sit down if you wanted to. and they had 12 beers on tap. i didn't try all of them, but they had some good ones like delirium, st. bernardus, etc. and all the guys who worked there were pretty knowledgeable and very friendly, so i would definitely go back there again the next time i'm in the city.
