“French Bistro in the West Village - Eat Like a Local”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2012

Bistro de la Gare is a great neighborhood find. The food flavorful and fresh. Ingredients are locally sourced. The wine list is accessible and reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and attentive, but not intrusive. The chef always comes by to check on the meal and chat. The atmosphere is perfect. Unlike many of the local restaurants, you can actually have a conversation with your friends without shouting and you don't need a flashlight to read the menu. The garden is particularly pleasant on a summer evening. We've been back many times.

“Fantastic food and great service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2012

We wanted to go somewhere romantic to mark our first trip to NYC. After a lot of research we found the Bistro de la Gare.

It was easy to get to and nice and close to the metro. When we walked in it was near empty which was initially a little off putting but are so glad we persevered. We ordered the mushroom salad for starter which was lovely and the pear and presecco ham which I really enjoyed although my other half wasn't so keen.

We both ordered the steak and chips for main. The steak was so tender, it was perfect. Up there with the best steaks I've had. My other half likes hers well done and when it came out it was a little pink still but for me the mark of good service is the way they react if something not quite right. They were so apologetic and fixed it straight away.

The owner was really nice and chatty and made us feel welcome and valued customers.

Towards the end of the meal we were shocked to see loads of people coming from the back so they must have a big garden which will explain why the main restaurant was so quiet. Overall a great experience and hit the mark on the romantic front.

“The Best French in the Village”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2012

The Chef here is a wonderful addition to the experience. I always feel as though I am in her kitchen and she has made something special for me.
This restaurant is peaceful compared to the chaos of so many village restaurants. They have a wonderful wine list and a great menu. The staff is attentive, but restrained. This restaurant is particularly good if you want a delicious meal after a long day and wish to speak with your companions without yelling.

“Doesn't disappoint and is fairly priced”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

We hadn't been to this place in quite some time although we live in the neighborhood so our dinner turned out to be a real reminder that Bistro de la Gare is really good and that we should and will return more often. Three of us shared two appetizers. The fritto misto vegetables were very tasty. The pear with goat cheese and prosciutto consisted of three tiny pieces of pear and cheese wrapped in the meat. I would say it was the only disappointing part of our dinner as it was so-so. But all three entrees made up for that minor disappointment. My two friends had the trout and salmon. Each loved their dish. I ordered the homemade pasta with chicken livers - a dish I have never had before. The very wide pasta was super and the sauce was rich and multi layered in flavor. Mary Ann,
one of the chef/owners dropped by several times to see how we were doing and each time we gave her the accolades that she deserved. The meal was a treat.

“Very good brunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2011

Went for brunch with another family with kids. The brunch menu is not typical fare and was very good. Had poached eggs which were cooked perfectly, over crab cakes. The crab cakes were also good, as was the bacon (it's easy to serve bad bacon...not these guys). Would definitely go back again. The garden area in back is nice.
