Designed for comfort, relaxation and the enjoyment of food, drinks and conversation, the 55-seat dining room and 15-seat bar/lounge reflects modern India with a nod to cultural traditions and motifs. Guests may also enjoy a seven-course Chef's Tasting Menu (also a Chef's Vegetarian Tasting Menu) and bar snacks, as well as a thoughtful list of spice-friendly wines, handcrafted cocktails and beers. "Tulsi" (pronounced TOOL-see) means divine basil.

Had dinner with my family last week. ordered Prawns, lamb chops for appetizers and butter chicken form main. The appetizers were just out of the world. One of the best meals i had in north America.

Tulsi offered two things that I will remember always: the best naan I've ever had, hands down, and Manchurian cauliflower: the dish that made me love cauliflower. Just a stunning meal overall.

the restaurant doesn't feel as upscale as Tamarind - havent tried Junoon yet

excellent food and VERY authentic - i was jet lagged and couldn't finish our food

it has bold indian flavors - not the fusion kind

loved everything we ordered - from memory (lassi, achari panneer, dum chicken biryani - not on the menu but can ask for it, a kofta dish, rosemary naan, pudina parata, kulfi)

service was VERY slow (took 15 minutes to get our table at the appointed time and another 20 minutes to get the check after we asked for it) but very courteous - service drops at most high end Indian restaurants when you don't order drinks - don't want to take to booze at my age to please the waiters :)

will definitely return

If you really want to appreciate good indian food, go to Tulsi! I have been there several times, mostly for lunch. I have never been disappointed. Their Tandoori salmon is to die for! And they have the most authentic dal makhani in NYC! Breads -- nans and paranthas -- are perfectly done and are straight from the oven. Most starters are slightly off beat (e.g asparagus, mushroom salad, which is hardly an Indian dish) but delicious nevertheless. My only quibble: they seem to have spent all their imagination in designing the main course. As a result, the dessert menu is limited. Kulfi is great… but there isn't much indian dessert beyond that! So, I only order masala chai instead, which is simply divine!

And finally, unlike most midtown places that are crammed with people, this is a nice spacious place, with nice upholstery that absorbs sound… so you can actually have a relaxed conversation without straining your voice and ear!

The environment was very nice and it is an elegant restaurant, but way toooooo dark. We had trouble reading the menu and then once the food was delivered....forget it. While the menu was diverse my food was a bit too spicy for me and I was never told about the heat or my preference.
