The Conrad Hotel is in an enviable location and has massive suites for a Manhattan hotel. Electronic panels that control everything in the room are state-of-the-art. The beds are comfortable with top of the line bedding. The sleeper sofa not so much. Our son ended up sleeping on the sofa as is rather than pulling it out. Now....the huge rainforest shower, as others have stated, is an event all in itself. However, with three adults sharing the suite, privacy is a challenge. All doors either slide or swing, and none of them lock except for the main entrance door of course. And here's the awkward part: in order to be able to undress outside of the shower and then get into the shower one has to stand in the hall between the living room and the bedroom, and close both sllders, warning the occupants that they'll have to stay where they are until you get out, get dressed, and open the sliders again. We went through this three times trying to get ready, and though it sounds amusing, it was just really inconvenient and ridiculous.
The lobby is like something from a futuristic movie. Words cannot possibly describe it but I will try. It is on the second floor. The first time we took the elevator up. Alternatively, the longest escalator I've ever seen leads upward to it and down from it, or you can ascend or descend the "Stairway to Heaven", the incredible number of wide marble stairs leading to or from more marble and empty overhead space than I've ever seen anywhere except in some sort of terminal or giant mausoleum. The ultra modern furnishings look like doll furniture sprinkled over the floor of the cavern. And yet with all this light pouring down from the skylights which seem miles high, it is dark and gloomy along the walls where lie the reception desk, the bar and restaurant (where a hamburger will cost you a mere $24 and change..), the gift shop, the fitness center, the business center and meeting rooms. This was not an inviting place to the three of us. Down on ground level outside, we found some nice restaurants-Harry's Pizza, where we ate lunch one day and dinner the next, the Shake Shack, where we had frozen custard, a deli where we ate breakfast and a movie theater which was unfortunately not showing anything that interested us at the time. Just a few blocks away was the river walk along the Hudson, which we enjoyed immensely. We took a hike over to the WTC memorial to visit the fire station and eat at O'Hara's Irish Pub, but it wasn't easy. Due to the construction in the area, the walkways are detoured through buildings up and down through many floors and back down to the street in quite a maze. It's the classic story of "you can't get there from here" but it was sort of an adventure. Back at the hotel with our aching feet, we wished that this hotel on the cutting edge of technology had thought to put in a pool or at least a couple of hot tubs. The service? The bellman was the bright spot in this cold zone. He was smiling, friendly, and helpful. The rest of the reception service seemed to match the surroundings: competent but without warmth. Upon initial arrival after requesting early check-in, on our reservation, our room was not yet ready. No big deal. On check-out day we had a late flight out but they were unable or unwilling to offer us a late checkout. Somehow that did not surprise me. Even though the product delivered as promised, and the hotel was an attraction in itself, and an experience we'll not soon forget, the ambiance just wasn't to our taste. When Carmel Limo came to take us to the airport, it was almost a relief.
