After being spoilt at Washington at the sofitel we came down to earth with a bump in New York, we arrived late evening, only 1 bell boy who was busy so we had to carry our cases ourselves. We checked in only to be told our request for a high floor room could not be met (advice is not to check in late as all the decent rooms have gone) and we had a room on the 8th floor at the back of the hotel which is not a good place to be, even though we had booked a luxury room. We checked in and agreed we would check the next day to see where we could move to and we did get a smaller but much better room on the 14th floor. Now given we were spending a week here, it was not our first visit and we are gold card members I would have hoped for better than we got, hence the advice, it was as if we have your money so tough.
Daniel on reception was great through out the stay and it was his attitude and politeness that turned this stay from a disaster and never coming back to we enjoyed ourselves, even though he was busy looking after VIP's. At the front end of our stay there were very few bell boys and doormen about, then all of a sudden they all seemed to appear due to the event and special VIP that was staying. This was not what we had experienced on our previous trips and very different to the friendly staff at Washington, may be some need to receive training from the head doorman at washington as his staff are top class.
Once we moved, everything was as expected, comfy bed, room kept clean and most nights the turndown service happened, on one night when it did not, getting some complimentary water turned into a farce even though I needed it to take medication, nearly an hour and I only got it because the head of front of house intervened, despite receptions best efforts. This was not the only housekeeping issue we had, we had a coffee machine in the room and every evening we had to request new supplies at it had not been checked and stock topped up. On this visit housekeeping certainly let the hotel down for a reason we never found out.
After the initiall issue with the room I have to compliment reception as they did their utmost to deal with housekeepings short comings, as an aside housekeeping never once answered the phone when I tried to contact them direct from the room.
We ate in Gaby's as we always do and the food was excellent, the slightly salted caramel ice cream is some of the best I have ever had, including from michelin star chefs. We even got a second helping because we enjoyed it so much, a nice touch and good customer service.
After a bad start some of the good staff helped redeem the hotel and we will probably return, but it won't be a given.
The hotel is central to everything and Bryant Park subway or 7th Av Subway are a short walk and will get you to anywhere in Manhattan and beyond. Do go beyond and see the real New York, there is lots to explore.
