Owner description: Bloomingdale's is America's only nationwide, full-line, upscale department store offering the latest fashions for Women, Men, Children and the Home. A 140-year history of fashion, innovation, dynamic shopping environments, special events, and the iconic Little Brown Bag make Bloomingdale's like no other store in the world.

Another of New Yorks iconic, large, shopping complexes. This has all the fancy fashion names. Spread over many floors, you could spend hours in here.

Super service, great prices and a tourist discount. Always on my to visit list. Staff are knowledgable and helpful. With a store plan it's easy to find what you're looking for. Remember to take your passport if you're an overseas' visitor to get your discount. Almost everything except make up and perfume. If you buy that you will be offered freebies anyway.

This hidden restaurant is on the 6th floor of the Lexington store. It's a railroad car fashioned after LeTrain Bleu in France. Perfect dining car right down to the luggage racks where you can stash your Bloomingdale's bags. We were there for brunch and it was delish!

Bit like Harrods in London - too big, too busy and too expensive. Much prefer Macy's where you can actually afford to buy something.

After visiting all the major departmental stores in NYC, Bloomingdales to me is the best for the following reasons:

1) it offers a 10% tourist discount (Macy's being the only other departmental store in NYC which offers this) making it attractive for tourists to at least offset the state tax.

2) wide selection of brands for cosmetics and skincare - LaPrairie (which some of the sales people at other departmental stores had never even heard of) and Kiehl's (which usually operate their own stand alone stores), as well as sunglasses (widest range of Wayfarers I'd seen)

3) excellent customer service - from the Kiehl's consultant (I've forgotten his name unfortunately) to the gentleman at the sunglasses section
