“Beautiful restaurant, good food, mediocre service”
Reviewed 20 April 2013

I've been to this restaurant a half dozen times. Each time is the same: The food is good, the wines are very good, the dining room is eclectic and attractive. The service is never outstanding, usually just acceptable. This would be okay if their prices weren't so high. At their prices, I just don't think they are worth the visit.

“Horrible!!!”
Reviewed 13 December 2012

Short review: Le Magnifique is anything but.

Not-so-short review: Came by pure chance or rather misfortune. Went for the steak and I wished I just went home. I apparently got the chef's shoe sole with a side of heavily diluted buttery sauce which my tastebuds have yet failed to describe. The bread should have been labeled accordingly since the closest thing that comes to mind is a desiccated sea sponge. The red wine glass I sipped on was the best vinegar I've ever tasted. Adding to the palate rape, the check amounted to burglary.

A name change to "Le Pathétique" is in order.

“One of the city's best bistros”
Reviewed 1 November 2012

Not sure if it's fair to call this gem a bistro as it offers such a wider array of dishes than the traditional fare you'd come to expect from a bistro. The two-story restaurant is right on the corner and offers one of the most cozy dining experiences in the city. The service was impeccable and the food simply divine. Suitable for a romantic date or a small gathering, this one is a must for all future NYC visits.

“(Magnifique) Not”
Reviewed 21 May 2012

The room had a cheery Mediterranean feel and the windows overlooked a pleasant block. Since we dined with 2 other folks I had a chance to sample a decent amount of the French fare. (I even got to sample a burger though it was dinnertime). The burger was ok, the Chicken was a little dry, the steak was just steak, the frites were good and the vegetables were very good. The vegetables were the best part of the meal and I am no vegetarian. My son John and I think we are liking vegetables at restaurants so much more these days because modern chefs have really gotten the hang of how to cook them, Don't forget to order the Haricots Verts. Unfortunately, the service was slow and inattentive. We are not the type to rush, so when I say slow I mean...really slow... Even though the place was not crowded. With 2 bottles of modest Sancerre (At 50 bucks a bottle!) the tab came to about $300 with tip for 4.
