4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

We had a great time at the chandler even although the reception & bar was still under construction.
We had paid extra for an upgraded room but were a little disappointed with the size & view (we asked for good view)
The location was excellent for exploring NY and found the staff to be very helpful.
The week we arrived, the complimentary breakfast and evening drinks had stopped although the hotel refurb was quite obviously still a work in progress (correction - we got 1 free drink in the bar as workmen installed the mirrors to the bar back drop)
Workmen held the door open as often as the door staff.
As this trip was our honeymoon, it took a little off the experience we had expected but the staff made the cosmetic issues in the reception insignificant (we were out all day anyway).
Overall, the hotel was good and probably would have rated in higher if it was not still under construction.
Would consider going back but would not rush back.

We have had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Chandler for quite a few years as guests from San Francisco. Our daughter graduted from NYU and we were looking for a reasonably priced quality hotel for our frequent stays. We found the lodging experience as well as the staff outstanding. The customer service is outstanding, everyone at the hotel is more than eager to always be helpful. The hotel continues to be updated with the latest customer friendly resources, they have continued in this vain over the six years we have stayed with them. I have to admit while there are many other choices in NYC to stay the Hotel Chandler is by far the best we have found. And finally, while NY never sleeps the hotel is located on a street where traffic noise is non-existant. It is where we will always stay on our future trips to "the big apple".

Room Tip: If you go on their website and are willing to prepay (which is unrefundable) you can save a bundle o...

Any review entitled 'Hotel Jewel in NYC' makes my day!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write. You are correct and it is quite amazing how peaceful and quiet the rooms are at Hotel Chandler, as we are fortunate to be located on 31st Street rather than a busy main avenue.

I am delighted that you enjoyed the now fully completed remodeling of the lobby, library, breakfast lounge, bar and guest rooms. We shall be opening a new restaurant towards the end of the year. I will keep you posted!

Kind regards,

MR

All hotel rooms in NYC are small. Lets get that out the way early doors. However, this hotel room was more than comfortable and if you brought your cat with you then there would be enough room to swing it. The bathroom is clean and tidy and the shower was powerful and hot. So far, so good.

The down side is that I as on floor 6 and was placed next to a fire excape which meant that there was no natural light getting into the room, maybe if I was in a room elsewhere on that floor or higher it would be different.

Also the walls are thin so when the lady next door had her shower at 7 in the morning, we could hear the water roaring through the system.

But dont take that away from the fact that the staff are friendly and the hotel is clean, tidy and great value.

I'd go again, and again, and again !

We stayed three nights at the Hotel Chandler in March and had a great experience! We booked through Redtag and got a really good price. If you have the time and energy, it might be to your advantage to shop around because regular nightly rates are quite pricey in NYC.

CONSTRUCTION was taking place in the hotel lobby at the time, but it didn't affect our stay in any way. We never heard a thing when we were in our room. Upon completion (this summer I believe) they will offer a 70-seat restaurant and approximately 600 square feet of meeting space. That being said, during our entire stay, they compensated each guest with complimentary morning breakfasts and Wine & Cheese events from 5-7PM located in a suite on the second floor.

THE LOCATION was great (31st St and 5th Ave). Walking distance to the Empire State Building, Penn Station, Madison Square Park, Flatiron District, Grand Central, Times Square, etc... What's also wonderful is that even though you are near everything, it's a very quiet neighbourhood.

OUR SUPERIOR DOUBLE DOUBLE ROOM was very clean and looked exactly like the picture on their website. It wasn't very spacious (225 square feet) but for NYC, it’s a fair size. We had all that we needed: really comfortable beds, a flat screen TV, free Internet access, an iron and ironing board, an electronic safe and a mini-bar. If you have an iPod, you will really like their iPod docking station and radio. The view from our window was of the fire escape, which wasn’t very appealing, but our friends in another suite had a nicer view. NOTE: There are no coffee machines in the room, but we would just walk a few minutes and get our coffee at a nearby Starbucks.

OUR WASHROOM was clean. We really did appreciate the comfortable bathrobes and the Aveda products. The only thing that we didn't enjoy as much was the rainfall showerhead because if you wished to take a shower without being completely soaked from head to toe, it was close to impossible. TIP: If you absolutely need a bathtub, please contact Reception because not all suites have them. Ours didn't have one, but we didn't mind.

THE STAFF was fantastic! We felt at home the minute we stepped in. The staff was very courteous, friendly and attentive to our needs. When I thought that I had left a valuable item in the room (after check-out), a nice gentleman searched the entire room with me, to no avail, but it gave me peace of mind to know that I hadn't left anything behind before heading back home. The item in question was later found at another location.

PARKING was available for $40 per day. We didn't have any in-out parking privileges; they took our car at check-in and gave it back at check-out. Definitely not cheap but parking is a luxury in NYC. Anyhow, who really wants to drive in New York? If you can't walk to your destination, it's cheaper and less stressful to take the subway or a taxi.

We would definitely come back and would recommend Hotel Chandler for its location and wonderful staff.

I stayed at Hotel Chandler for a long weekend in March. The hotel front and lobby was under construction making going in and out a bit dusty but inside was fine. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable (not too soft as many hotels are now moving to those soft pillow tops where you sink into the mattress creating many patients for back pain specialists). The free breakfast (which I understand is no longer free) was not worth the money. Yes, I know, I didn't pay for it but I also didn't bother going to it after the 1st day. I bought myself a yogurt at the corner store and stuck it in my mini-bar instead. More protein that way. And the coffee is better at the Espresso bar around the corner. Go out the door, turn right and right again...across the street is the best espresso bar in town! They also had a Wine and Cheese event from 5-7 which I went to the first day but again, if you want good wine & good cheese you are not going to opt for a free hotel reception. But the idea is nice and it's the thought that counts.

The price was not cheap but nothing is in NY. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the general atmosphere is pleasant. The location is excellent. Great Indian restaurants a few blocks away. Walking distance to the Theatre district. Subway close by. And yes, it was actually quiet. I think this is the first time I've stayed in NY where the all night honking didn't wake me up.

The elevators were indeed quite slow and I walked down a couple of times the 8 flights, however, a slow elevator gives you time to meet people :)

Our family went to NYC for Easter weekend and I looked for a hotel that was affordable(not easy in NYC).We got a good deal directly through the hotel. We all had excutive suites which were perfect. Very comfy beds, spotless and on the larger side for the city. The only negative about this property is the elevators very very slow. The staff was great especially the bell hops they were fantastic. Would stay again for sure. Great location to the sights of the city.
