“Top notch location, service and comfort... what more could you want.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2012

We have stayed at the Library Hotel a number of times and it never fails to be excellent. Firstly it is in a prime location, within a short walk to Times Square, 5Th Ave browsing, Grand Central Station and so much more. The rooms and amenities are great. But then you could probably say that about a number of hotels. So what makes the Library Hotel stand out, you may ask. It is the extras, like the extensive breakfast, which is included, the tea, coffee and snacks which are available all day in the reading room, the complimentary wine and cheese hour every day and the turn down service every night. Dont think twice about staying here.... just do it and you will not be sorry.

Pros:
* The room was big enough, by New York standards, and the washroom was bigger than most NYC hotel bathrooms.
* Central location.
* Free wine in the evening that lasted several hours.
* Attractive, relatively good-condition furnishings.
* 2 free bottles of water a day.

Cons:
*Weight-senstive mini bar. If you tried to chill something you purchased outside, there would be a charge (which you could probably dispute)
*Tiny TV.
* Inattentive waitstaff at Bookmarks, the rooftop bar. There were more staff than customers on the night I went, but it took forever to get my drink order in. Staff seemed very young/inexperienced.
* So-so complimentary breakfast. If you wanted your bagel toasted, you had to ask staff to do it.
* No access to an ice machine. If you needed ice, a bellman would bring it (read: tip involved)
* No freight elevator (typical, though, for NYC hotels) so you had to share the 2 hotel elevators with cleaning staff -- took forever to get an elevator at certain times of the day.
*Elevator was very warm. Not sure it even had A/C.
* Room would not be clean yet when I got back to it around mid-afternoon for a short break.
* Noisy at night, with doors slamming. Given the demographics of the guests (middle-aged couples), I wondered if staff were working at night, going in and out of storage rooms.
* Misleading address -- it's posted as Madison Ave but the entrance is actually on 42nd. Hard for the limo driver to find the entgrance.

Thank you for choosing the Library Hotel for your recent stay and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We care very deeply about providing a great guest experience so we appreciate all the feedback as it often is useful in helping us refine our services as well as our communications with our future guests. One of the items you mentioned we are already working on. Because of your comment on the address, we are reviewing now all the places our address is listed and wherever possible, we are modifying it to say 299 Madison Avenue, entrance on 41st Street. Most experienced drivers in NYC are well aware that entrances are frequently on the side streets, but if this helps make any guests arrival more trouble free, we are all for it.

We apologize for any inattentiveness on the part of the staff at Bookmarks. The wait staff at Bookmarks is actually hired, trained, and managed by a partner hospitality company and we will discuss your experience with them. They are normally very caring but the rooftop is so popular in the summer, it sometimes can be very busy but we will certainly work on that.

Some of the other items you note are not service issues that we can address and they may be the configuration of the building or simply something that is typical of hotels such as having a weight sensitive mini-bar. Of course, we will gladly reverse charges for anything not actually consumed. By the way, guests may request an empty refrigerator in the room if this is an important issue for them. I also think that it is uncommon among NYC hotels to have guests toasting their own bagels or getting their own ice. Both are primarily space issues but ice would also be a noise issue on the guest room floors. A tip for future guests: there is always a full bucket of ice in the Reading Room on the second floor which is our 24 hour guest lounge with free refreshments served all day. Regarding housekeeping, most of the staff is on from 8:30 – 4:30 so first we clean the rooms that have checked out and have new guest arrivals expected that day, as many of our guests wish to check in early and we want to do our best for them. Next we do the rooms that have put out the “please dust my books” door sign out which indicates to us that the room is free and ready to be serviced. Our tip for all travelers who like the room cleaned earlier than later, is to put the door sign out whether you are staying with us or at any other hotel.

Thank you once again for sharing your perspective. If anyone has any additional comments, questions or concerns about any of these items, please contact me personally and I will gladly give you a straightforward answer to help you decide if the Library is the best hotel choice for you.

All the best,

Robert Rawlins

My husband and I stayed here for two nights between two parts of our long and involved international wedding (a Canadian marries a Frenchman...) It was the perfect break we needed! We had told the hotel we were celebrating our honeymoon, and were delighted to receive an upgrade, and to find a bottle of sparkling wine in our room. All of the staff, from the bellman to the front desk, to the ladies at breakfast and tea, were so helpful, courteous, and seemed to 'know' us. Felt like we were really looked after by all! The room was amazing, and filled with books. We loved the library on the second floor, and the wine and cheese evenings were a great way to get fortified before exploring the city at night! breakfasts, also in the library, were simple but of high quality, and the coffee machine a delight to use! Newspapers, Internet access and really great people made this place perfect!
It's a good location, easy walking to everywhere we needed, and there were buses, subway, and taxis right there if you needed them.
We will certainly be coming back!

The Library Hotel is fabulous. The rooms are beautiful , not huge, but so well appointed and very comfortable. I especially loved the decor of the bathroom.Loved the books.

Breakfast was simple ,so fresh ,perfect to start a busy day of sightseeing.

Location is great for the Metro, busses , Broadway and plenty of walking sights.

New York doesn't sleep and a room on Madison does have light and noise considerations .

The service at this hotel is outstanding. Staff are friendly and helpful . Nothing is too much trouble.

Room Tip: I would probably ask for a room not facing Madison when next I book at the Library

We had a wonderful nights stay here for the final night of our honeymoon. We arrived to find a bottle of champagne waiting in our room as a gift from the staff at the hotel. We were given room 705, and it was clean, comfortable and quite slick. This room was titled the music room. Walking in the door of the room, we were also greeted with the sound of jazz playing on the radio and books about music lining the bookcases. Really was a well designed themed room. Was not tacky at all, but very elegant.

The hotel provides free wifi and breakfast. Also, they provide a cheese night, however we arrived too late into the night to partake.

Staff were very helpful, courteous and professional. We would certainly stay here again. It was so close to a lot of midtown attractions and restaurants like central station, empire state, public library and shopping along 5th ave.

Also the rooftop bar is a hidden gem in this large city.

Room Tip: Ask for 705.

If you have looked at the pictures of this hotel, you know that it is beautifully appointed, and can see the books, DVD collection, and reading room. My room was exactly like the pictures which was delightful (they certainly did not just pick the best room to showcase the hotel!)
What made the hotel stand out for me was the service and staff of the hotel. Not once did a staff member fail to say hello- whether it was the doorman, front desk, maintenance or housekeeping staff, or the (?) manager on his way up to the offices. The staff knew who I was, remembered what I did, remembered my name and were helpful with directions, cabs and everything i needed. The reading room staff kept the public space very clean and the refreshments well stocked. The front desk and doorman/ bellman were attentive and friendly! I would stay here again. Also if the other 4 hotels in the Library hotel chain have the same standards of excellence I would definitely stay there as well.
