“An East Village neighborhood gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2011

Ngam is an East Village neighborhood gem. They've converted a rather conventional space into a fun, modern, homey space which quite well reflects the food. Ngam means "beautiful" in Thai and the food is just that. Beautiful.

The pork belly fried rice is divine, the pad thai is reinvented and special, the Thai corn chowder will have you begging for more. Ngam makes amazing fries as well but with interesting starches including pumpkin and yam. The specialty cocktails are tasty, especially the Thai Colada.

“Delicious surprise but not quite enough for the money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2011

My boyfriend and I stumbled on Ngam one night after Halloween costume shopping and decided to give it a try. The ambiance is a little stark and trendy in this small venue but an abundance of wood and open kitchen adds a homey warmth.

I started with a "Snow White" cocktail and, while very tasty, seemed to have very little alcohol in it. I switched to wine after that. We shared the chicken wings as an appetizer and they were tasty (with a great dipping sauce). We both got the same entree which was VERY good, the braised short ribs with wild sesame seed jasmine rice. I used my fork to break down the short rib, it was that tender. Well cooked, well seasoned, we ate every last bit of the dish. And that was part of my problem with this place. The prices ($22 for the entree) did not reflect the portion size. Either give me more, I definitely could have eaten it, or charge less.

The cuisine is "modern Thai comfort food", definitely some dishes you haven't seen at your local Thai place. But while it is a cool place to eat with excellently prepared food, it's just not proportional to the money you'll spend. There is just as good food out there for less.
