Didn't know what to expect. Walked into a very cozy club. Service was warm and friendly. Surprisingly good smoked southern food. Good music, nice, homey ambiance. 20 piece band. How could you go wrong? Even my 22 year old daughter enjoyed it.

“Good food, good Jazz”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

We are Jazz lovers, being in NYC means - get as much of it as we could. The venue is a bit overcrowded, but we had a good table and the setting is among other patrons, so we had the opportunity to sit next to a couple of New Yorkers on one site and another from Chicago on the other. The evening was presenting music by Gil Evans - mid 50's and the style is Miles Davis with a fantastic vocalist.

“Old Timer”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

We are in the mid 50s as a couple but the audience average age was higher than us. We thought we would find some locals in the club but it was all touristy! Tables are quite large enough for couples comparing to other underground jazz clubs! Serving is friendly but late. Menu choices are very much limited to ribs and meat. We are not vegetarians but love to see the choices. The music was not our type of jazz. It was advertised as saxophone and clarinet, hence there was no saxophone but trumpet. We had only one night in NYC, we should better plan next time! Cover charge was $30 and very normal for this type of performance.

“Best jazz club food”
Reviewed 13 March 2014

We go here several times a year. I used to be sure this was the best jazz club in all of New York: friendly service, the best jazz club food, the most respectful management in a business that generally treats its customers like won't-be-back-again tourists (which most of them in fact are). For the most part these things are still true, but that may be part of the problem, if you are here to hear jazz. The food is for sure the best of the NYC clubs, but at times I think that, here more than other clubs, people come to eat, and hear jazz in the background, rather than come to hear jazz, and have dinner while doing so. That, coupled with "nice" management, creates a place where the quiet policy is probably the least enforced of all the clubs in town. All service used to be efficient and friendly but lately there seem to be fewer staff, and those there are seem less happy about it. Service is often slow when you are first seated, courses overlap each other, the last time we were here my drink order was incorrect (just the wrong whiskey, nothing complicated) and when I told the server who brought it to me (not our waiter) she removed it and brought back the correct one but practically threw it at me, dropping it and sliding it in front of me across the table. This wasn't my imagination, my companions were shocked... The jazz here is always very, very good, when you can enjoy it in spite of the people around you.

“Just what the doctor ordered”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

We went to see Maria Schneider's big band over Thanksgiving weekend with a large party. We reserved in advance and got a great table right where Maria was conducting. This review is about the venue, not the band, but I have to say that the band was totally excellent … everyone in the group was 100% invested in Maria's music. The sound balance was great and the management announced a "no talking" policy, so the attention of the audience was really on the performance. The waiters were as unobtrusive as possible and the dinner was quite good. Food and drinks arrived in a timely manner. All in all a very pleasant evening and just what the doctor ordered.
