This tour is billed as a hot cider tour--too bad it was such a warm day for December.

A lovely young lady, Sarah, led our tour by describing the history of the beautiful Eldridge St. Synagogue and the process of renovation. We then walked around the neighbourhood and visited the Forwards building, a pickle store, a bialy bagel bakery, and a few other sites of Jewish interest.

Sarah was very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions from the interested crowd. We came home with some yummy pickles.

We visited the synagogue and had the free tour at 10am which was really great. The young woman guiding us showed us the different interesting things inside, told us about the history of the place and the reconstruction. The blue stained glass window is - according to us- just stunning.
It was really worth it!

This ranks with the historical 19th century synagogues of Europe and Israel as well worth a visit. Visitors of any religion will find a beautiful and graceful spiritual space. The modern stained glass may be jarring to some, but a synagogue is not meant to be a period piece. The museum also tells the story of immigrants to America, eager to carve out a place for themselves.
There is a small, plain synagogue in th lower story of the building. This is where the small congregation meets each Shabbat for prayers. I saw a cart with siddurim (prayerbooks) and a Hebrew calendar - evidence that it is used for prayers on a regular basis.

The synagogue is an amazingly beautiful reconstruction. The lights, the craftmanship, the stained glass window. the sense of history. Just beautiful and so actually a very spiritual setting -- no matter what your religion.
It used to be in the middle of the Jewish Lower East Side, but now is surrounded by Chinatown. A New York curiosity where cultures overlap. After the fascinating talk and look around, we had lunch at a Chinese restaurant nearby.

I was fortunate enough to happen upon the museum on Open House NY when it was free admission, but it definitely worth paying the ticket price for. I didn't even plan on visiting but am so glad I did. This museum is an incredible example of a restoration done right, and the most beautiful synagogue I've ever seen (I'm jewish). The tour is informative and gives an added layer of historical context. Also, the centerpiece stained glass window might be a modern addition, but it is absolutely stunning!
