“Theatre with extra Armory flair”
Review of Park Avenue Armory

Park Avenue Armory
Reviewed 13 June 2014

We visited the Armory to watch Kenneth Branagh's interpretation of the Scottish play and my, was it a good idea to do it there!! The atmosphere inside the Armory is so conducive to a Shakespeare tragedy. Heavy wooden flooring and doors, high, high ceilings and paintings on the walls provided a brilliant backdrop and on their own were very interesting.
The drill hall was huge and impressive and certainly as a stage it was fantastic. We will have to go back to look at the place without any theatric props present.

Fascinating set production...well staged...K. Branagh has stage presence, but he delivered his lines like he was late for a train...Bleacher seats for 2 hours without intermission is quite uncomfortable, and makes you loose focus; markedly reduces the enjoyment of the play..

Saw a production of Macbeth at the Park Avenue Armory. As incredible as the show was, it was made even more incredible by the setting. Got to explore some of the smaller rooms before the show and felt like I was wandering through a castle. I can see how the Armory makes such a great performance venue as the main drill hall space is incredibly versatile - for this particular show, it was transformed into a Scottish heath complete with dirt, grass, and rocky paths. Highly recommend seeing a show here if you have the opportunity.

Sir Kenneth Branagh as Macbeth would have been wonderful on any stage, but the staging of this production at the Park Avenue Armor was spectacular! Even the seating of the audience was a spectacle! This is not to be missed.

I was lucky enough to see a production of “The Scottish Play” with Kenneth Branagh last night in this venue, and I only wish all my theater experiences were so rich and fulfilling.

The art, woodwork, rooms-all designed by different famous artist and designers from the turn of the century. If that was not enough, it’s now being used for concerts, plays and exhibitions (two years ago they rebuilt a copy of the Globe Theater right in the center of the main hall for a run of the Royal Shakespeare Company).

I’ve become so intrigued by the place, I’ll be returning this summer for a tour.

If you ever get a chance to go here for any sort of event, don’t pass it up-this is a New York jewel.

Highly, highly recommended!
