“Best in NY”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

We have stayed at the Mandarin Oriental NY several times and we think it is clearly the best overall hotel in NYC. My wife and I stayed in May and the service was excellent(especially front desk and concierge) and the rooms are modern and have phenomenal views.

Key positives:

-consistent fantastic service
-amazing views from the lobby and rooms
-best breakfast in NY - great food and views
-well styled rooms
-great location for exploring mid-town and central park
-large gym with good equipment

Nothing on the negative side

Great Hotel!

I want to love this hotel as I love the chain's hotels in Singapore and Hong Kong but this one makes a good try but just is not as special as some of the other locations. For NYC it is pretty good. I just wish it was something special.

Stayed at MONYC during long weekend last February. It was a busy weekend with Superbowl taking place in NJ and we were asked for full payment in advance which, under the circumstances, I did not find out of the ordinary. I have been in other hotels of this level in NYC (Four Seasons, Plaza, Ritz) and found MO as my favorite maybe at par with FS.

We had tickets to the Metropolitan Opera on Sat night and I cannot think of a better location to stay at walking distance from the Lincoln Center.

Our check-in process was a delight with the receptionist coming up with us to show us our room.On check out they volunteered to print our boarding passes without us asking. Concierge was also a great asset of the hotel and we were given very professional and invaluable advise about restaurants and activities in the city.

In our room, the views of Central Park through floor to ceiling windows where exactly what we were looking for, great setting and sumptuous decor. Loved the washroom and walk-in showers; one of the bests I have seen!

During our stay we used the Spa several times which was a great experience. Sunday brunch at Asiate was a delight and staff honored our request of a table by the window overlooking the park.

It was a cold and snowy weekend and we enjoyed the direct access to the Time Warner building mall for shopping and walking by.

Only improvement that I can think of is the MO Bar which we found hard to get to and closed quite early at night. I would suggest improved signage to make clients aware of its existence.

We will be back!

Room Tip: Highly recommend Central Park views if you can afford it

The hotel is nicely situated on the Columbus Circle with is very convenient for exploring the city & shopping. We booked a park view suite, which was on the 40th floor and had absolutely fantastic views over the Central Park. The room itself was spacious (which is not common for NY hotels) with big bathroom with bath and a shower.
The Asiate restaurant at the hotel is very good-fantastic food and great views. But the lobby bar&restaurant is not so good-we did not like the food at all.
Unfortunately, I had a terrible accident at the bath, that was slippery-I've fallen down, bruising my leg, arm and breaking my teeth. That's where the staff were not as helpful as they could've been in such a hotel. The only help we received was a pack of ice and an address of emergency dental service which turned out to be a place where students do their practice exercises. They also offered "a call to a doctor" (he called in 1 hour since we asked), as the doctor visit would be 350$. I did suggest that they should do something about the bath as indeed it is very dangerous without the special coating. I've spent several thousand dollars on fixing my teeth and buying medications for my leg & arm - very high price for the absence of the non-slippery coating or a rug. So our impression of the hotel was spoilt at the end.

As we are regular visitors to the MO NY this is an update to our previous reviews.
We were there at the end of March and for 4 days in June. We always like it and bumping into a celebrity is quite common. This time it was Morgan Freeman who was very chatty and explained a bandaged hand was the result of a car incident (not that he was driving).
The hotel reception, concierge and valet staff are always efficient but sadly the housekeeping and in room dining is starting to slip. When you pay these prices you expect everything to be perfect. For some reason their Reading Program which we love, missed our room everyday??? Did not get a reason. The best pillows in the world have been changed, I was told that they are testing new products and our input will help them decide, why change when it was perfect.
The in room dining service forgot our complimentary smoothies completely the first day, then only 1 the second, on the third no butter and by the time they did, the toast was cold.
Not major problems but as I said earlier if you stay at this level it has to perfect.
The major issue though this time concerned the cost of international calls, I had forgot my charger and before I bought a new one I used the house phone, big mistake, don't do it. One call was over $100, I complained bitterly and they did take off 25% all the call charges but this still left a sour taste.
They said that the phone company operator charges those rates and they don't make any profit from it, I don't believe it for one minute.
Please note they do however respond to complaints very efficiently.
So if you like hard pillows, don't order room service and never make calls on house phone and can afford to pay the rates and enjoy a bit celebrity spotting, then this is still the best hotel in New York even though it is looking just a wee (we are Scottish) bit tired.

Room Tip: Central Park view is excellent but the Hudson River view rooms have longer bathrooms with twin sinks...

When my husband suggested we stay at the Mandarin I was hesitant based on the rates. This hotel is worth every penny and more. Incredible location at Columbus Circle and we could walk to broadway shows and Central Park. When the hotel heard it was our anniversary they upgraded us to a high floor park view room which was so incredible. The view was something special for sure. You can get the same view from the 35th floor lounge so grab a drink there--sunset was especially great as the sun reflects on the buildings in the city below. The room was very clean and the decor throughout the hotel is gorgeous. very comfortable beds and pillows. The concierge service was extremely helpful without making us feel rushed or a pain. Great service and staff! We will be back.

With Mandarin Oriental you expect good quality and New York MO did not dissapoint. Spa was great for a couples treatment ...beautiful couples room including huge hot tub and steam room and sauna all inside. Our bedroom overlooked the park. Room we found a little small , not so bothered about the ShangHai Tang toiletries....prefer Aqua di Parma or Bulgari ...as found in Hong Kong M O etc... Staff very helpful. Overall a great location though in New York. No ladies hair salon but found one nearby.
