My norm is a comfort suites or a holiday inn express and I love them- I don't have high expectations. All I ask for is a clean, comfortable and safe place to lay my head with a pleasant staff.

The only reason you would come to stay at this hotel is the location.
I read the reviews, we werent planning on doing anything but sleeping 6 hrs a night in our room.
The staff where incredibly pleasant and accommodating. Granted I didn't ask for anything during our stay so I do not know how they would treat that request.

There is a lovely wood paneled sitting/reading room towards the back of the first floor- past reception- which is completely wasted because nothing happens there- wouldn't kill them to put out a coffee machine and some fresh fruit since the comfy leather chairs are already there. Reception is lovely, updated and kept in tiptop shape. Thats where the pretty ends.

They get a pass on the elevators being a construction zone as it looked like they were in the middle of repaneling them. We even shared the small space with some funny construction guys our first day there.

Hallways are deplorable with peeling wall paper, stinky dirty carpet and peeling paint.
The hotel room is a 13'x13 square with a window facing a glass building. Happy w the view- could see streets, weather, nice breeze. We faced the jogging track for a very posh looking business building.

The bathroom is completely redone and modern, but not the bedrooms. Carpet is dirty and very very worn.
Thankfully our window opened, because even if you turned the heater off ( we were there Dec 15- lots of snow and I HATE the cold), you were broiling by 2 am- we had to sleep with the windows open every night or risk overheating to the point of nausea.
We are from south Florida, we can handle the heat. But this is ridiculous.

Towels are small and scratchy- bring your own toiletries as they only provide a small bar of hand soap.

The location is top notch, never felt like the area was dodgy. Lots to eat in every price bracket.
Realistically, the next time we go to manhattan I will try to get the holiday inn express across the street.
I usually go for privately owned hotels because they care more, but not this time around.
Would not recommend this for a business trip as the beds are uncomfortable and the wifi is dodgy.

Room Tip: I liked the room facing the street as it really wasn't noisy and it provided a good breeze, plus...

I stayed here with my boyfriend in October '13. The location is perfect, right beside Times Square and central to everything! Basic hotel but lovely staff and the room was lovely. We were given a room at the back of the hotel, our only view was the wall and back alley but we didn't mind as we only slept in the room and we were out all day, plus there was complete silence in the room where as I'd been told the front rooms are very noisy from traffic outside. We would definitely stay here again as it is a very inexpensive hotel and the location is the best you can get!

The hotel is located within a 2-minute walk from Time Square. However, pictures of the hotel shown at their website or booking websites are quite different from reality. Rooms are rather small, our room had no natural light but from an inner courtyard where other guests could be seen. Moreover the air conditioner was so noisy that we could barely have the window open for "fresh air" to come in. The building is quite old, although there have been some renovation efforts. On the bright side, staff at the reception was very helpful and despite being totally overpriced like most hotels in NYC, it may be a good choice.

We spent two nights in this hotel on our recent visit to NYC. Based on the reviews we had read, the hotel was what we expected so we were happy with our choice. If you are looking for amenities or luxury, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a nice small hotel to spend the night, this is a good choice.

Pros: nice hotel, great location, clean, good room size (I expect the rooms are not all the same size, ours was very roomy).

Cons: cheap mattresses (if you have a poor back this may be an issue), noisy heater a few times overnight (like someone clanging two pans), and cheap blinds with no room darkening window coverings.

If you are looking for pampering with all the amenities, the St. James is not for you. If you want a clean, comfortable room in a great location at a reasonable price, this is the place.

On 45th st. between 6th and 7th ave., it's less than a block from Times Square, two blocks from the TKTS booth and a short walk from all the Broadway shows. There are lots of restaurants and shops within a few blocks. For a weekend seeing a couple of shows, it was perfectly placed.

There are some minor flaws. First, there are three stairs up to the lobby; it's not handicapped accessible. Second, the room has no information on the hotel, and not even a listing of what the channels are on the tv. Finally, the heat is from steam radiators that will occasionally whistle, so if you're a light sleeper you might turn them off at night.

For my purposes, where a hotel room is just a place to sleep at night, this was a very good place. Would definitely stay again.

I stayed here in January 2012 with family and cannot fault the hotel. it is perhaps a little run down (old carpets etc) but it was spotlessly clean, had very friendly staff and is right in the heart of times square so all of that overshadowed any decor issues.

There were three of us in a room with two double beds, a large wardrobe, two sets of drawers and a night stand. We had no issues with noise (though I'm not sure on which side of the hotel we were) and the towels/bedding etc were changed daily. as well as this there was also a phone available, a wall mounted tv and wifi which was free of charge (a huge bonus!) the bathroom was spacious and had both a bath and a shower and the temperature in the room was always fine - especially considering it was january and freezing outside!

As for the location - it is absolutely perfect. literally a two minute walk from times square, close to grand central, Rockefeller centre, central park, penn station and also the bus terminal. there are plenty of places to eat around the hotel (the cranberry cafe next door is very good for breakfast like many people have already mentioned!) as well as a variety of shops for almost anything else you could need.

one thing that was very useful were the lockers which are available to store luggage in after you have checked out - i think these cost $5? and we were able to fit two suitcases in to one which meant we could have one last afternoon in new york without dragging our bags around too.

i would definitely stay at this hotel again - the prices are excellent for the size of the rooms and the location, it's new york after all so you'll hardly be spending any time in the rooms anyway.
